Delta L-1011 Vs 727 Liveries

Why were Delta's 727s painted in the 1997 and 2000 liveries, while the L-1011s were not? Delta announced plans to retire their 727s before the 1997 livery was introduced, originally intended to be replaced by the MD-90, and then the 737-800. I don't think it was worth the money to repaint the 727s.

I can only speculate...

1.Some of their 727's were going in for mtx checks, where more often than not, a/c are repainted due to the a/c being out of service anyway.

2. It cost's more to paint an L1011 than a 727.

When was the last L1011 flown for DL?

DL had a target date to paint their entire fleet. After setting that date they decided to accelerate their 727 retirement. So some were painted because they were still going to be around up until 2008, I believe. However the L10 retirement had already been set prior to the 2000 livery change.

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

I don't recall the L10's being planned for 2003 or later since the 767-400's where coming online with basically the same capacity and longer range. Of course the maintenance and fuel efficiency of the 767-400's also offered lower operating cost.

You keep saying the MD-90 was supposed to be a 727 replacement. It was not bought with that in mind.

As for why the airplanes were repainted, I would bet it has something to do with when the airplanes went in for their heavy checks.

YES IT WAS! The MD-90 was indeed originally supposed to be Delta's 727 replacement. Delta had a large order for the MD-90. Due to the more frequent mechanical problems with the MD-90, the remaining orders were cancelled in favor of the 737-800.

The real answer is yes and no.....DL did place a large MD90 order and it was expected that as the MD90s were delivered, some older 72S aircraft were to be retired....but the MD90 was never "officially" thought of as the 72S replacement. Its all a word game, and in the end, things worked out very differently.

Also remember that Boeing's influence was the main reason that DL cancelled the bulk of its MD90 order .....Boeing had just acquired McD and was offering its 737NG and Delta moved along to the 738. The MD90 did get off to a difficult start but DL seems suprisingly happy with their small fleet of MD90s and finds them useful for certain routes out of SLC.
