On Friday, RFD is going to announce a new international destination for the winter time. Any ideas?

Maybe another Apple Vacations destination? I don't think its Allegiant, because all the airpots that say they might have expanded destinations with them, they mention Florida routes.
UAX, no way. ANyone have anything to offer?

I just presume that it will be somewhere south of the border. Either somwhere in Mexico or the Caribbean on a charter basis.

If I didn't have to go to work, I'd probably go to the airport for the announcement.

Well DL is substantially eating into their JFK ridership. Mostly because Hungarians avoid their airline due to Malev's lack of reliability.

Since the original story was factually incorrect I have requested the moderator to delete the other thread that I authored.

Well yeah, the original RRSTAR story was incorrect. They said it would be Festival before they got the email back from them after the story was published. Any ideas though Karl?

Hasn't Rockford been trying to attract service to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Jamaica? I thought that was what I read in their last SCASD application.

Allegiant does now have blanket authority to service anywhere in Canada but I can't think of any place up there that would make sense as a winter destination out of Rockford. But then maybe there are skiers in Rockford who would want to go north?

Allegiant has also discussed adding Mexico and Carribean destinations. But I haven't heard that they were ready to start in that direction yet.

That was my first thought.

That'd be interesting. Of course, you'd need a long range 10-seater, as that would probably be about the market size for a daily nonstop  Smile.

Out of interest, under the US-Mexico Air Service Agreement is RFD part of Chicago or a separate airport? Maybe USA 3000 ciuld start RFD flights?

Looks like it is an Apple Vacations expansion:

ROCKFORD — Apple Vacations will expand its non-stop seasonal service between Chicago/Rockford International Airport and Cancun, Mexico, during the late fall and winter, according to a company statement released today.

What a big surprise. A seasonal route is coming back. Wahoo!!!

In reality RFD is trying to get as much publicity as possible in hopes of landing more airlines and more flights. I don't know of an airport that tries harder to get service than Rockford.

The service is to be expanded with a longer operating season which is good news for RFD but I agree with the general point of your post. A lot of publicity about a relatively minor announcement

There is supposed be another announcement of a new carrier, not Festival in a few weeks. With that and Festival, I believe that is why O'Brien said in one of the articles, maybe the WREX one, that he expects passengers in and out of RFD to double in the next few months. Also, according to a woman I spoke with at the airport during the announcement yesterday, a new website for RFD will be up.
