Northern Air Cargo Readies Transition To 732's

Interesting article from the Alaska Journal of Commerce. I didn't know that NAC had purchased these 732's from DL.

That is interesting...

I remember back (only 15 years ago!) when NAC was just transitioning the 727s into service. Back then, they were the world's largest DC-6 operator, and had a couple of rare examples of that type.

Now those planes are coming up against the end of their useful lifetimes, and the venerable first-generation 737s are taking their place. Kind of makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

This is interesting...Are the Multi-function display screens similar to the FMS/ACARS boxes found in currently equipped 732's? Or are they talking about a modern flight deck with the steam gauges replaced by screens (Similar to the MD10 conversion program)?

I suspect its the FMS boxes...But interesting to see....

I'd be surprised if NAC used the 737's to completely replace the DC-6's. When I was flying out of Fairbanks, I'd see the -6's in the most unlikely spots; Venetie, Huslia, Ambler, Beaver etc. Most of those runways simply would not accept a 737, especially with the low-slung engines on the 'guppy'. I'm sure they have a replacement in mind for those locations, but I'd bet a lot that it isn't the 737.

You know, that leads me to wonder if these 732's will be gravel-kitted, similar to what AS did with some of their combis.

From the article you posted:
The NAC jets will be outfitted with gravel kits to help the keep the jet engines from sucking in debris on rural runways that they service.
