Does anybody know how's AA's situation with its former employees in ASU? Have they made any progress in getting AA to pay some liability? Feedback really appreciated on this.

I have a friend that worked in AA in ASU. She told me AA paid them all fees applicable (same as when a company fires you) and 2 years of travel privileges for themselves and family members (D2s).

Not a bad deal. But is it safe enough for AA to return there one day?

Yes. American Airlines does want to resume service to Asuncion, but only if the travel agent commision that made them leave in the first place is removed.
