Continental Airlines' regional affiliate, Continental Express will begin to operate in Puerto Rico in September,
industry sources revealed yesterday.
The sources state that the airline pretends to establish
a hub in San Juan to fly to the Caribbean and Caracas, Venezuela, similar to the one already operated locally by American Eagle.
Presently, Continental operates hubs in Houston, Cleveland and Newark, from which they operate over 900 daily departures to 90 cities in the United States, as well as internationally.
Representatives of Continental Airlines in Puerto Rico were not available yesterday to confirm the information, nonetheless, El Nuevo Dia was told that the airline already has pilots on training to fly the new routes.
On Thursday, TWA also announced the intention to bring its own regional operation to the Caribbean and Caracas (TWA Express). If both airlines' plans are successful, in a matter of a few months the Caribbean will go, from depending exclusively on American Eagle, to an all-out competition from three airlines.
