Growing up in the city of Detroit I am pretty well used to the congestion and craziness that DTW has. I now work in that airport and here all the comments that are made first hand. Comments that range from unfriendly staff, lack of dining facilities, and cleanliness issues.
Anybody that has flown thru DTW knows what I am talking about. I am curious to know how many think the new terminal will help DTW with these issues or if most of the flying public is just to fed up to care and do anything to avoid a connection in Detroit.

Also being a native metro-detroiter, I really think that the new NW midfield terminal will help with congestion............If your flying Northwest. The Concourses that NW is in now are slated to be demolished and rebuilt better. Same goes for the L.C. Smith terminal. Hopefully, all of what NW occupies now will be offered to other airlines to get a tad bit of competition in this NW monopolized area.

The designs for the new terminal look awesome. I wanna be there on opening day, even though I live far, far away. Indoor trains will take passengers from one end to the other, as it is expected to be very long from end to end. What an improvement it will be.

I volunteered on NW in August. Along with the $500 vouchers, they gave us $40 in dining certificates, telling us the best place to eat was "The Innkeeper". Not only was it dirty, I ordered a Steak, and I ended up with a burger - "Sorry, we're out of Steak - heres a burger". The only plus of eating there was it was free (duh!) and we had a table that looked right at the arriving runway, which several 747's and DC10's touched down on while we ate.
The staff there is ok - there are the ones who will accomidate anything, and there are the ones that just sit there and do their job.
I must admit I never used a bathroom at DTW during my 9 hour stay - I walked into the Marriott at the end of the E terminal and used their bathroom. I was the only one in the bathroom.

According to airline employees at DTW, once the new midfield terminal opens, the majority of the existing airport will be leveled. Plans are in the works to build a new Marriott in the new terminal, and the old one to be demolished. As is, Concourses A through D are to be leveled (and thank God concourse C is going!). Concourse G is going to be renovated to handle jets. Spirit Airlines is to occupy concourse E, and F & G will be all other airlines. You can also see that this has been the plan by looking at the parking structure, all of the main areas and bridges (the good ones at least) go to the Davey (North) Terminal. Anything leading to the Smith (South) Terminal was basically just polishing a terd, aka the old stuff.
The only reason that so many improvements have been made in the Smith Terminal is to please the passengers there, and make a bit more room for Spirit and Southwest. Once all of the renovations are complete, DTW will be a much more passenger friendly airport.
