Got an email from my travel agent:

Quote:
Thai Airways INTRODUCES HYD

Thai is proud to announce the commencement of its sixth Indian online destination – Hyderabad effective October 31, 2006. With this new service Thai would have a total of 33 flights a week to Bangkok ex – India.

Daily flights ex – Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, five times a week ex – Kolkata, four flights ex – Chennai and thrice a week ex – Hyderabad would ensure that we offer smooth as silk service to Bangkok and beyond to your esteemed customers.

Hyderabad would be served with an AB6 aircraft as per the following schedule:

Flight Number From/To Days Departure Arrival
TG329 BKK - HYD 2,4,6 0830 1040
TG330 HYD – BKK 2,4,6 1150 1640

And indeed - the flights are loaded on the GDS and can be booked. Good news for TG and Hyderabad!

The problem with TG is always the connectivity and again with this service I doubt that there are going to be a lot of optimal connections. There will always be at least one direction with long waiting times at BKK. TG should look at its schedules and I am sure that a lot can be done to improve connectivity and streamline the hub. Smooth connections tend to attract premium traffic.

Indeed - I've stopped flying TG these days since they changed the BKK-LAX timings - as I now need a 17 hour stop over each way from BLR.

However, there's a fair bit of O&D traffic to Thailand from India, and I don't think this flight will take time to get popular.

The other thing TG needs to do is to tie up with it's *A partners (like UA) to offer connections from BKK to the US (where TG at least gets the feed from India - BKK). Or connect via the *A hub at NRT.

If that requires UA flying to BKK via NRT, then it might as well fly to DEL/BOM than to BKK.
Moreover, I am sure TG must be flying to NRT. How suitable is TG for BLR/HYD-BKK-NRT-LAX/SFO? I mean taking TG to NRT, and from there on UA.

Amazing news... I guess I know who I am flying to HYD next year.
Hopefully with a nice stopover in BKK for some spotting at their new airport.
Shame it's just with the AB6 rather than the A330.

Cheers,
Kaz

TGs main target market from HYD is the O&D business/tourism market to Thailand + 6th freedom traffic via BKK to NRT, HKG and China for which decent connections are available.

For HKG, there is a 2 hour transit at BKK, for NRT its 5 hours and for PVG/PEK its 6.5 hours.

If their flights to BLR are any indication, they could easily manage with a single class 320  Smile The flights are sometimes less than 50% full, and normally with very light loads in Business class.

I woulnd't call a connecting time of 5-6 hours decent. As a matter of fact, it is the shortest way to not attract a lot of premium traffic. I don't know what's up with TG and connectivity. The airline flies virtually everywhere, yet doesn't seem to be able to make the BKK hub work. Too many lost opportunities there.
