My friend just called from DCA and his flight to LGA is cancelled, they told him all NYC airports especially LGA is experiencing major delays/cancellations due to weather. Anybody know the extent of the delays at NYC airports?

No one's going anywhere today, that's for sure. Haven't seen this kind of thunder and lightning in a long time. Fun stuff!

The guys in IAD and YYZ should luck out with a lot of int'l diversions, though I don't know exactly what's going where.

I live in Long Island 15 minutes from JFK and I swear I haven't seen this kind of weather since my days living in Tampa, FL. Won't want to be flying this afternoon. There are reports of power outage already.

Thats weird, I live right next to philadelphia and the weather is only cloudy, no rain (knocking on wood). Granted its 80 miles away, but the weather is usually similar. I just turned on PHL Live ATC, they said to one of the aircraft, their starting to get the diversions from NYC area which in turn will slow up PHL. Sounds like it going to be an interesting night.

EDIT: NYC area is in a ground stop as of now.

Multiple lightning strikes on the airfield here at JFK, it is very nasty. I don't see thing getting back into the swing of things until later tomorrow. This is the 2nd or 3rd thunderstorm of the day here.

Second thunderstorm of the day here on Long Island's South Shore. It's pouring - lots of thunder and lightning. Not good.

And I have box seats to the Mets game...

Go figure.

It is 5.51 ET, and the rain has stopped 5 minutes ago yet there are more T-Storms expected according to the hour by hour forecast, are there any landings takeoffs at JFK and LGA at this time or are we talking ground stop here?
P.S.Jetbluefan sorry for the mets game, I'm a big yankee fan, but hate when stuff like this happens

Well down here in PHL there has only been some spotty thunderstorms so far, but I guarantee the delays are already mounting at PHL.

We left JFK this morning at 0930 or so. We where on a gate hold due to a thunderstorm moving over the airfield and then when number 30 for takeoff, so we where a bit delayed in getting out but made up a little bit of time. It was still very ugly there this morning/afternoon.

Insane thunder and lightning and rain all day around LGA, except for a couple of hours of sunshine at midday. Your buddy shoulda taken Amtrak...

I was contemplating going down there actually, I had off of work today for once! I figured the storms would eventually hit here so I decided against it, after hearing this now, I am pissed I didn't. Hopefully there will be a next time and I won't pass that opportunity up!

What do the carriers like AT and KE do with no presence in PHL. Who covers their ground work? I can't imagine they leave people on the plane so wouldn't there be gate issues?

I was at EWR this afternoon from 4pm to 6pm. It was the most intense cloud to ground lightning I have seen in the NY/NJ area in a decade. Multiple strikes in and around EWR. The whole airport was at a standstill and the roads around EWR were flooded.

Absolutely amazing series of storms in and around NYC today.

SWF got 11 diversions today, I spotted:

SAS A330-300 (EWR)
Evergreen 747-200 (JFK)
Continental 757-200 (EWR)
Continental 757-200 (EWR)
ATA 737-300 (LGA)
ATA 737-800 (LGA)
jet Blue A320 (JFK)
American Eagle ERJ-145 (JFK)

The poor passengers on the SAS had to wait in the aircraft for 7 hours because the crew timed out during the wait and they were not allowed off of the aircraft because there is no passenger custom operations at SWF.

Looks like there's still some lightning out, though it's not raining.

And for anyone who cares, it stopped raining as soon as the Mets game started. It was a great game and excellent weather - and we won 7-0!

It's going to be yet another bummer day today. Lots of wind already, and it's supposed to start pouring within the next 2 hours. "Strong thunderstorm" warnings from 4pm-9pm.

Not a good weekend.

B6 didn't cancel too much yesterday but 2 JFK-BOS flights for today are already cancelled. I can only imagine what other airlines are doing

BTW, how's the weather in BOS? Last night JetBlue 1261 operating BOS-IAD was supposed to depart at 8:30pm and arrive 10:15pm. Instead, it departed at 4:22am and arrived at 5:45am. That was probably the only time that the first flight of the day (this morning's IAD-BOS) was delayed due to "late incoming aircraft."

Boston apparently got some pretty strong storms as well. I was off that day so that's why BOS didn't get too many diversions. Only two BA (a 744 and a 772) and a United 772. However, about 6 weeks ago we got some nice diversions. A few DL, a TK 343, a LH 333 (a rare sight these days  Sad), OA 343, AT 763, IB 343, BA 744 amongst others. And last week we got Air China and QANTAS 744s. So, I can only imagine that airlines didn't want to divert here because I think once weather improved in JFK they were still stuck here due to t-storms in our area. Oops.
