I just watched the 6:00pm Honolulu news and looks like Hurricane Daniel will make a mess of things here in the islands later this week. It is still 800+ miles east of the islands but is moving west and forecast to go right over the Big Island of Hawaii and just south of Maui and Honolulu as a tropical storm. Anything can happen between now and Thursday night but if your travel plans include any of the Hawaiian airports later this week, you might want to watch for updates. Here is a link to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center here in Honolulu:

And just think, it formed just that distance southwest of Cabo San Lucas not quite one week ago. You can also track this storm on the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center based at Pearl Harbor: http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/warnings/ep0506.gif
Just think of SJD-KOA!

Damn I'm due for a one week stay in Hawaii starting August fourth. Flying from SFO-HNL then from HNL-Hilo where I will stay for 2 days to see the volcanoes. Then I fly to Lihue for 5 days. Return is on the 11th LIH-SFO. Shitty situation if the thing hits!

RELAX! It will be back to being a tropical wave by then and will have passed and not hardly do a thing! When was the last time KOA was shut down in late July or August due to a Hurricane? The fact that this thing formed as close to the southern tip of Baja and has progressed past 140 degrees (Miami's Center to Honolulu's center) is what is amazing. That rarely happens!

A tropical storm or tropical depression can still do a lot of damage. Two years ago we had a day with strong winds in the 40 mph area that caused lots of damaged roofs, uprooted trees, and knocked down power/telephone poles. It is forecasted that the winds from Daniel will probably be higher than 40 mph when it reaches the Big Island.

We usually get a couple every year since that's usually where most of the hurricanes form. What is rare is when they form in Honolulu Center's area. You'll know when that happens when the storm has a Hawaiian name.

It actually sucks a lot of strength out of hurricanes quickly. The deep ocean means lower water temperatures and less energy to feed the storm. Because of this Hawaii hasn't been hit by too many hurricanes.

Of course, I'm going to Hawaii in December, so I hope this doesn't screw anything up. It's just like how it always seems to rain after I wash or detail my car. Just mother nature screwing with me again...

Can any of our long-time Hawaii a-netters recall what AQ and HA did to prepare for Iniki in '92? It's not like you could've ferried out 732s and DC-9s...
FWIW, Daniel has already been downgraded to a TS and is now supposed to pass south of Oahu on Friday night, meaning that it will have weakened even more by then. Lucky for us!

Quoting BA286 (Reply 14): Any more news about the hurricane? Im seriously due for a flight from SFO-HNL in 9 days! And 3 inter-island flights. Hopefully it'll pass by then.
Looks like you're going to be safe. Have a wonderful vacation!
Fair use excerpt:
"Forecasters downgraded Daniel to a tropical storm overnight, and said it may weaken to a tropical depression as soon as Tuesday afternoon. Satellite images showed it rapidly losing strength...Because Daniel is now a shallower storm, forecasters said it will now be steered by an unusually strong high pressure system just to the north-northeast of the state. What remains of Daniel will likely be picked up by low-level east-northeast trade winds and pushed further south of the islands. "

Both carriers actually were flying scheduled flights in and out of HNL until the last moment possible. Their aircraft were then flown the opposite direction of Iniki,to Maui and the Big Island, until Iniki passed through Kauai.

I was only 9 at the time, but being a young airplane lover I do remember them showing AQ and HA operating flights as long as possible and then moving all the planes to OGG, KOA and ITO. Being that O'ahu was spared I am pretty sure the planes came back in the evening on the 11th or early on the 12th.
I am also pretty sure that AQ operated the 1st flight to LIH a day or two later, with HNL-OGG/ITO/KOA ops returning to normal within 2 days.

For the record, it's spelled INIKI. In pronunciation, stress is on 'ni'. And it hit Kaua'i on 9/11. I remember this incident very, very well because it fell on my 9th birthday. What freaks me out is that on my 18th birthday, the World Trade Center crumbled. If something happens on my 27th birthday, I'll just lose it!!!
