Deploying The Thrust Reverser While Flairing?

Hi,

I came across this picture and wondered if anybody could explain, why the pilot deploied the thrust reversers, even though the plane did not touch down yet.

It was very common to use thrust reversers in-flight on the DC-8 as well, although I don't remember seeing it done during the landing flare.

I heard the DC-6 and DC-7 do it as well. I read the Flying tiger book by Moldrem and it said someone doing reversing the inboards doing decent.

But wasn´t that the cause of the Lauda Air 767 Crash in Thailand?
If memory serves me right, the reverse thrust deployed in mid flight causing the plane to crash. After that incident, planes got modifications in order to prevent similair accidents. If those planes you mentioned are able to deploy their thrust reverser in mid flight, isn´t there still a chance, that such an accident could happen again?

Yes, that was one side and at high altitude, so ripping the wing off. one engine full one way, one engine full teh other, something has to give

The 767 wasnt ever designed to deploy reverse thrust off the ground, hence the ability for the engines to deploy independantly. This is corrected on those aircraft taht can deploy in operational flight.

I think you might have meant the Trident. The VC-10 had wing spoilers which it could deploy as very good speedbrakes if required

Actually no, on the few airframes produced prior to 1965 the inboard engines could have their reverse thrust buckets deployed inflight. These were removed after 1965 due to tail buffetting problems and thus the capability was removed with them.

The Trident could as well, you are correct.

It was definitely a capability built into the first dozen or so airframes before the inboard reversers were removed from the design, my grandfather flew them and used to regale me with tales of the quick descents he made due to this feature (and no, he never flew the Trident).

I have flown a number of times on IL-62s and can tell you definitively that they commonly apply reverse thrust prior to and at the flare.

Weird but true. Actually makes for an amazinglys smooth landing.

Well I defer to grand father's knowledge, but whilst the
Standard VC-10 had reversers on Engines 1 & 4 only, the Super still had reversers on all 4 engines until after I left the fleet if my memory still serves me.

Anyway not to worry, and who knows I might have flown with your grandfather.
