Well, I can only say half of the truth but when I visited an Aviation museum a while ago, there was a Convair 440 and they let people go in. So I visited the cabin and there were those seat back tray tables, actually I had a little snack there. So, I don't think they are the product of the jet age, they have been around earlier.
