Ocean Air, a regional airline from Brazil, is taking advantage of VARIG problems and it's planning to fly to more destinations in Brazil and even internationally. According to "Folha de São Paulo" newspaper, Ocean Air will start new service to CWB and POA next week. Also is confirming that will be flying to LIM and even LAX. BOG and CCS will be next, since Ocean Air is just waiting for authorization from the Brazilian Authority for Civil Aviation to start the routes. According with the newspaper, Ocean Air will be receiving a 767 and 757.
Ocean Air have most of their flights out from SOD, a city nearby São Paulo. I wonder if they will transfer full operations to GRU, and when that will happen.
Rgds.

Very interesting news. LIM and BOG make sense because of Wayra Perú and AV. Any idea where those planes are coming from and when they are expected? Are they by any chance ex-RG frames? Good luck Ocean Air!

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Would make more sense for Ocean to offer service to LAX via code-share on Avianca's nonstop BOG-LAX B767 service initially.

Hi Ocimar, just a little correction, SOD is their maintenance base, their main station is CGH.
The news says SOD receive little planes and this release a F100 to run more domestic services like POA and CWB.

Their Network nowadays:

Eddie, rumors that Ocean Air could obtain the 4 752 ILFC planes RG is loosing. Concerning to the 763, i don't know.

Hakan, i don't know Ocean Air plans yet, but i believe they will try the flight thru LIM due to the rights grant by reciprocity (Lan Peru flight GRU-LIM-LAX).

Yes, but i believe it's due to aircraft restriction in the past. Lan Peru feed their flight at LIM.

Hi Everybody!

Last time I was in Brazil I saw two (maybe the only ones  Confused) Ocean Air F-100 in CGH. They have the same tail color as Avianca and I have to say that it was nice!

Hopefully we will see some larger birds in Ocean Air colors cross LA skies.

Lets speculate  biggrin

Does anybody think that Ocean Air could join any Alliance in the future?

Claudio

Interesting news! I was expecting something of the sort. Would be good to have more info on where the planes are coming from, or how and if the Synergy airlines fleet is being juggled.

Well, the rumour is that Avianca is flirting with SkyTeam. Then OceanAir might be part of that package.
Indeed, let us get used to calling Ocean Air, Avianca. As that is what it is becoming.

This might make sense, but at the moment the flight times LAX-BOG would mean 15 hours connection time to GRU! OK northbound though.
So basically, unless OceanAir put lay some suitably timed extra flights BOG-GRU, connection is not practical.

Intersting that OceanAir is planning to fly to LIM. TA/JJ and LA already operate this route. I thought OceanAir would rather operate routes from Brazil to BOG and use 5th freedom rights to continue onwards to LAX.

As mentioned, GRU-LIM-LAX could be a possibility, but this route is already operated by LAN. It would make more sense to operate GRU-BOG-LAX.

With the fall of RG and AVs constant increase of destinations (now covering pretty much of Brazil with OceanAir), this might be feasible. Doesn't SkyTeam requires some standards for their F and J service? If so, AV has lots of work to do, mainly in their J service (Actually only Premium service they offer), which is limited in offer and seats are not that "new".

Cheers

Next flights: AV BOG-ADZ-BOG, AV-UA BOG-IAD-ORD-IAD-BOG, BOG-FLL-BOG, LA BOG-MIA-BOG J

I am sure that if OceanAir acquires large jets, they will have a premium class cabin. With a premium class cabin, they would be interesting for an alliance.

If AV indeed wants to become part of SkyTeam, OceanAir could well submit, simultaneously, an application for associate membership. What I find a bit complicated is that CM and AV can coexist in an alliance... PTY and BOG are too close to each other, and CM's strategy of having several banks of flights optimized for north-south connections perhaps makes it more attractive to SkyTeam members than AV.

You point well to the problem. In Colombia there would be a clash too, as the country's second airline, AeroRepublica (mosly likely being renamed Copa Colombia in October) would possibly end up in the same alliance.
But as AV wants to become part of an alliance, should it forsake its important co-operation with DL and flirt with something like Star instead? Or be a whore and try to do both?
AV might appeal to them, with the prospects of OceanAir (which is changing name to Avianca) becoming bigger in Brazil as RG agonises.
Going forward, one can forsee more destinations in Europe from BOG too.
