UA "slow Down" @ORD Sun/Mon?

I went in to work early this morning. An AA agent was telling one of our leads that UA had some problem with its crew scheduling, something about being over hours for crew rest or something to that effect. So Sunday and Monday there would be some type of slow down, and AA were taking on some UA passengers because of this situation on Sun/Mon. Is there any weight to this? I know the FAA regulates stuff like this but did anyone else with ORD or UA and AA hear about something like this?

The end of the month time period can be tough for airlines particuarly if they have experienced multiple days of irregular operations early on in the month eating into crew availability and duty time restrictions.

Last month the same thing happened,they ran out of pilots and cancelled,a high up official in the flight department "left for personal reasons"because of this,he apparently had been too slow on pilot recalls,the same thing is happening this month,they are scheduled to the hilt and just do not have much open time to be able to pick-up additional trips.

It's a UA management screwup, pure and simple. Trust me, there is no "slow down" going on at all. Most of us are flying full 85-95 hour schedules with minimum days off. ALPA warned the company 6 months ago that there were not enough pilots to fly the summer schedule. The company told ALPA to pack sand and that we didn't know what we are talking about. Now the Summer is here with the unpredictable weather and as soon as irregular operations start, we run out of reserves fast. This hasn't been a problem on the international fleets, but it has been a major issue on the narrow body fleets. They fired the VP of flight ops, but he was pretty much a puppet for Pete Mc Donald and Glenn Tilton. Those two were probably two busy counting their bonus money to mind the store...

With the summer storms at ORD and the busy travel season, I'm not surprised that UA is having troubles. UA definitely diverted a good number of planes this month.


If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Year like today we had a severe storm warning until 4pm. I'm so gladd its my off day. Well UA still has some bumps in the road to work out. After all the F/A hiring and calling back of furloughed pilots things are still shaky.

Question: Do most people that are put on furlough just have to go look for another job? Or do they get some time of stipend? If its the former, are most willing to quit their new job to hop back on a plane!

7106 is a Mesa flight. Whatever the issue(s) were with that flight would
have had nothing to do with United's crew problems.

Being furloughed is being laid off...you just get recall rights...from some one who has been through it twice...I can tell you...we just call it being F'ed.  crazy 

They get the option to return when necessary.

I have a friend at DL who said they had to recall 200 pilots to get 50 to return, not all want to return.

Most US carriers have what is called by-pass rights. They may be on
active military or might be waiting for a certain airplane or domicile
to be available for their seniority. Others may be waiting to hold a line
before going back. Sadly, many won't go back for various reasons.
Each airline does it a bit differently though. Some have a time limit
and others have a set number of times to turn down recall before
they forfeit their seniority.

Keep in mind that many may have left years ago. They've moved on in life - you have to if you want to live a life and support a family. The Washington Post had a pretty interesting article about this back a few weeks ago.
