Hi everyone. Can someone clear up for me the history of how these three companies are related to each other? Here's what I've been able to find:
-Varig helped set up Rio-Sul as its regional partner in 1976.
-Transbrasil helped set up Nordeste as its regional partner in 1976.
-Rio-Sul acquired Nordeste but kept it as a separate brand in 1995, at which point Nordeste also became a regional partner (?).

If the third part is true, why would Transbrasil let its own partner go?

Many thanks in advance.

Transbrasil helped to set Nordeste but some years ago, they and VOTEC (the other partner) just sold their shares for the Government of the State of Bahia.

In 1995 Rio-Sul acquired Nordeste and improve their fleet with some Embraer 120, Fokker 50 and one Boeing 737-500 (PT-MNC). With these fleet start better services between GIG and CGH to BPS/SSA/IOS. During the next years, Nordeste fleet was improved with more 735 and some 733 (PT-MNJ, MNK, MNL). Due to the financial problems on Varig, in 2002 they incorporate Nordeste fleet to RG fleet.

Hope it could help you !

If you need more info, let me know.

Transbrasil had one simple reason: financial distress.

-Varig helped set up Rio-Sul as its regional partner in 1976.

Rio Sul started in mid 1976 with a fleet of EMB110, Bandeirante. In the beginning, its main market was the countryside of the southern states of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná) It also had some few flights connecting the southern states of Brazil to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Its corporate headquarter was in Rio de Janeiro (Av. Rio Branco 85) and its principal operational base was POA.

Last week was the 30th anniversary of my father's first job as a commercial pilot, he was hired in July 1976 to be a co-pilot in a start-up regional airline named Rio Sul. He did the ground school, flight simulator and line instruction for the EMB110 in Embraer factory and ferried the 3rd EMB110 from SJK to POA.
