3 Days Spotting Trip In London Heathrow

Hi everyone!

Me and 5 of my friends want to go to Heathrow from YUL on August 23. We would be arriving on the 24 for a long spotting day. Then we would sleep at the hotel to finally come back on the 25. My parents think that we are the only ones on earth that like staying at an airport for 7 hours to watch planes land and take off. They think that wasting about 600$ to go plane spotting in one of the world's biggest airport is completely stupid and that people that like plane spotting are "fucked up". Can you please just sign your name and say yes I would do the trip just for the sake of spotting in Heathrow..to prove them wrong.

Thanks Bryan Big grin

Your parents are right!  duck

I've spent a day in London on a spotting trip, and while I enjoyed myself somewhat, I wish I had spent more than just part of one day doing some sight-seeing in the city. Even when there are spotting events here in YYZ where we have a large gathering of people, I enjoy what happens after the spotting when a portion of the group ends up going out for dinner, or perhaps downtown, or anything like that.

To me, the idea of having like-minded people get together, making new friends, is all worthwhile. I would love to go to SXM for instance for the spotting. However, I would personally not pay $600 to fly to LHR from Canada for the sole purpose of plane spotting.  Smile

My parents are saying that every plane spotters are fucked up...you agree with them so it means that you are fucked up..no? (don't take it as an insult...I'm just asking you a question) I did not write the whole storie but my parents also said that all airliners members were retarted.

Hey man, sounds like you are dealing with pretty unreasonable attitudes to be honest. It's your money, and it sounds like you are pretty enthusiastic about this trip with your friends. As such, I say go for it. You may also spend your whole time at the airport plane spotting, but I hope you take the time to check out other wonderful things that London has to offer. You need to enjoy life on your own accord, doing what makes you happy. I'm looking forward to your trip report!

I'm all in favor of doing retarded, f'd up things. Example: I wanted to get a ride on a Northwest DC-10 before they were retired so I bought a round-trip MSP-LGW ticket in October. Total time I'll spend in London (well, Gatwick): four hours.

To directly answer your question, I'd do it, but I'd be smoking Cuban cigars while I did it--can't get those in the US!

Your money, your time, have fun!

I completely agree. It amazes me that he would shell out $600.00 to sit around at an airport, missing out on one of the world's greatest cities. But if that is what makes him happy who am I to argue?

Agreed, I lived there for a number of years in the 80s as well as making many visits since and London still ranks at the top of the list as one of my favourite cities, bar none.

Well, your parents should consider the alternatives. There worse things in the world you could be spending your money on. You could be involved in drugs, wanting to go to AMS for the canabis festival. You could be involved in yob gangs robbing banks, but you're not. You're interested in a harmless hobby that is an interest of yours. Tell them to go take a hike and buy your ticket to Heathrow.

Personally, I think you're nuts, to miss out on a city and just sit around at an airport all day, but it's your money, do what you like with it,

As an American student living right here in London, I have the best of both worlds!

I have a great city to explore and live in (and mostly, study in).

At the same time, I am really close to LHR (just one hour via the Piccadilly line on the Tube from Russell Square, where I live, to LHR)! So, I go out almost every Saturday morning and spend the whole day at LHR!

So, being in London affords me the opportunity to zip right out to nearby LHR on an almost weekly basis!

So if anyone wants to show me around LHR that Monday afternoon, I'd appreciate it!

Found $600 airfares to LHR in the summer, LUCKY YOU!!!!!

Quoting STARalliance24 (Reply 3):

They are right. But you could be flying to go and see the Stones or Madonna from 350 m away in a 1,000,000 people crowd for $200 and that could be equally retarded, IMHO... Or go and watch a Superbowl final, or whatever... People from all over Europe camp 5 days in l'Alpe d'Huez on the steep side of the road to watch their favourite athlete on the tour de France passing by during 10 seconds. These people are actual families, from the 60-year-old to kids. Tell that to your parents...
People with passion are always seen as retarded by depressing and boring people who don't have any passion for anything...

If it's your passion, go for it, perhaps you'll realize that you should have spent less time at LHR and more downtown London, but then you will learn from your mistake and not do it again next time...

Get us some nice shots, man! If you get us a shot of a BA 340 and a VS 777, I'll buy you a flight to SXM... Big grin

Being in Montreal, I'm not sure he will have any reason to do so. We have all what we could ever need here in this domain...  relieved

Personally, there are better places to spot.

BHX, BIA, Exeter, Southampton, Southend, Manston, MAN all spring to mind.

IMO spotting at LHR is pretty limited.

BTW, where are you sleeping? You can get a room at the Renaissance Heathrow, ask for a room facing the runway and you can spot as late as you want in the comfort of an air-conditioned room (hey, it's been a real hot Summer in London).

I'm the friend of the threadstarter...

When he said that it will cost 600$ to go to LHR, he wanted to say that it will cost 600$ for the whole trip including the hotel, the food and everything. We have the chance to go there with another person that almost have free tickets. That's why we really want to do the trip.

No I'm not that kind of guy. I'm just back of a two days spotting trip in YYZ and what I did is 100% of spotting. I'm very happy of what I did because I'm a spotter and I had a lot of new airplanes registrations in YYZ.

I know I'm talking for the threadstarter but I'm going with him for the trip and also, I helped him to start the topic.

I think they are more interested in the traffic than the quality of the spotting locations. SEN/MSE are alright for a quick drive-by but I certainly wouldn't fly all the way from YYZ to spend a day there!

STARalliance24

Go for it! Spend your money on what you want to spend it on. Although personally I'd prefer to make the trip a bit longer and fit in some non-aviation stuff aswell.

Cheers
