Rising passenger numbers have helped British Airways shrug off the rising cost of aviation fuel and post a 57% increase in first quarter profits.

Pre-tax profit for the three months to the end of June hit £195m, compared with £124m in the same period of 2005.

Profits rose despite a 44% rise in fuel costs and a 7% hike in staff costs as a result of BA's pension scheme deficit.

Maybe someone should IM him, so we can read his drivel!

Great news for BA and an excellent achievement for all concerned. However, the pilots' case on their pensions is strengthened......

Ha-ha, I'm sure he's finding something to moan about, perhaps he'll say that the huge profits are due to price fixing  Yeah sure

A very healthy set of results. It is unfortunate that despite this good performance the pensions deficit is still hanging over the airline, and indeed appears to have worsened. Hopefully the issue will be dealt with for good over the course of the next financial year, so BA can move on and look forward to new aircraft and further expansion.

It is not just BA that has this problem, although I must admit they have a huge liability. It'll take quite some negotiating to work this one out.

Seems the tail is wagging the dog at the moment. Nonetheless, good results tho!

Many experts said that BA's long term objective (established some time ago under Eggington) of achieving an operating margin of 10 per cent was pie in the sky. Perhaps the most significant figure in their first quarter results is an operating margin of 9.1 per cent. The revenue increase of 12.5 per cent to £2.3 billion and the operating profit increase of 20 per cent to £211 million are also outstanding figures.

Well done BA staff and well done BA management.
