"Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier based on domestic passenger boardings. The airline, based in Dallas, operates more than 3,100 daily departures in 62 states and has more than 32,000 Employees nationwide."

How many states are there in the United States?

Do the commonwealth states count? How about Canada, Mexico, and Israel?

Are those red or blue states? Maybe the federal government has given them the power to change cities to states. (Wouldn't want to be the person that let that release go out)

Is that even true when you consider AA and AE as one carrier?

Just curious -- I have the ASM data (AA is definitely #1), but not pax carried data.

They added Canada as separate "States" rather then to refer to Canada as the "51st" state. With 10 provences and three territories, minus Montreal because of their Frenchness = 12, plus the 50 U.S. states =62 states.

Yes, Remember, Southwest said DOMESTIC boarding, so they don't count intl boarding with AA/AE, So domestically, Southwest carrys the most passengers of all the airlines registered with the United States.

Dammit OPNLguy, you beat me to it!!! Yeah 62 States... hmmm, I have been following the war in Iraq for a while, as well as the crisis with Lebanon and Israel. I don't remember the US declaring any other wars on foreign countries, having them collapse, and then we reap the land and somehow claimed 10 states out of it, as well as added Puerto Rico and Guam to the Union...

But hey, maybe there are MORE CARDS that Congress isn't showing  Wink

Funny thing is, my mind knew it was cities...I didn't even notice that it said states...

They can't really "fix" a PR, but they can release a "revision".

Even the haters couldn't do much more than have a little fun with this.

A previous press release (July 27) says Dulles will be their 63rd city, and that their current count is 62 cities in 32 states.

While this is an embarassing mistake, there is no need for Southwest bashing. They are the airline with the largest market capitalization and a sound business model unlike AA, CO, UA, NW etc.
