My freind text me yesterday to tell me that a VS 744 flew over his head flying into EMA.

Does anyone know the reason for this visit?

Training - I hear they frequently do circuit training there.

I work about 10 miles from the airport, and often when I am taking my class out onto the field for PE there are planes doing training circuits. Have spotted a Virgin A340 several times but not a 747.

Would have been nice to see it, but I am on my 6 weeks holiday, lol.

Did anyone get any pics?

I believe this particular visit last night was the aircraft on 'air test', rather than training.

I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

What is an air test?

Sorry for sounding thick!

Air Test is when an aircraft needs to fly in order to test a system or component which has been replaced / repaired in maintenance. For obvious reasons, this can't be a regular passenger flight.

Air Test is common following major engine repair / modification, for example.

In most cases Air Test simply involves flying around in a big circle for an hour or so (somewhere like the English Channel) while the appropriate checks are made on the system(s), but sometimes a take-off and landing or two is also needed.

It is not practical or cost effective to do circuits at LGW or LHR and so East Midlands, where Virgin already have a negotiated landing rate and handing for their regular A340 training flights, is a good option for this exercise.

I will try and find out the exact reason for this particular flight.
