Finnair? I just want to know how many of you have even heard about it or actually flown it. Any comments are wellcome.

Of course, very well known airline. They fly here to FAO with MD-80 and 757 and sometimes the MD-11. Never flown it but I'm sure other forum members will give you more detailed information.

It is the national flag carrier on Finland....They fly 5 MD-11s and a number of MD-80s DC-9s and 757. They are actually one of the launch customer for the 757-300. They are majority government owned but will be privatized further in the upcoming months. I have never flown them but they should be like SAS. Typical Scandinavian, plain, simple and clean.

I think not a lot of people will say much about Finnair, specially from USA, they probably will think that's a commuter airline based in Roswell of something. I'm from Portugal and since mid 70's I've been spotting airplanes and I actually have seen the evolution of Finnair. First aircraft I recall seeing was the good old Caravelle, not the III series but the 10B3 series with P&W turbofans. They started with OH-LSA until I think LSH? They were popular in Lisbon airport, but sometimes you could actually seen some other airplanes, for example I saw in Lisbon also the DC-9-15 Sport at least in two ocasions. Also latter I saw the DC-9-51, MD82/83 and 87. When I was travelling around Europe I saw also the DC-10-30 in Amsterdam and landing just after me in Heathrow I saw the DC-8-62. When I moved 2 years ago to Algarve I saw there A.300 with Finnair colours but I presume they're leased by Kar-Air and finnally the brand new 757-200. Besides that I think you're gonna like it because its also finnish I saw in September of 1980 the DC-6 swing-tail OH-KHA early in the morning from Kar-Air in London-Heathrow, I had to wake up really early to see the plane because normally it would leave London at 7:30/8:00 am!

I have heard about them...Well, I think it´s natural as I´m Finnish aviation enthusiast.A couple of corrections are needed to previous posts/comments. Finnair has 4 MD-11s, not five. They got five 757s (all -200series with P&W engines) and they are not the launch customer for-300 series. Finnair hasn´t ordered any of them. The DC-6 mentioned was registered OH-KDA and it was a swing tail version (only 2 were built/converted). It´s still flying in Alaska by Northern air cargo as N867TA.
Finnair also flies ATR-72s and A321s (with DC-9-51, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87, MD-11, 757)
And it´s true, Finnair is very scandinavian and whats most important, it´s safe.

Finnair are one of the great European airlines, one of the few state-owned carriers that consistently makes money. I mentioned this on here just the other day ("What's wrong with the MD11"), I've flown them from London to New York via Helsinki. Excellent service, out business class back economy. The MD11s have 3-4-3 seating in economy but it was not an uncomfortable ride. Very efficient and big enough to be a "proper" airline, but small enough that a lot of the employees seem to know each other and definitely all the station managers know each other well, I was passed from one to the next on my journey as they knew who I was and looked after me very well, VIP lounge passes all the way even when the business cabin on the aircraft couldn't accomodate a non-rev passenger such as moi.

They make a LOT of money on their trans-Atlantic services, the load factors are in the region of 98%! This is because of the airline's tightly-scheduled connections from Russia.

The other great thing about Finnair that makes every British travel agent's life a lot easier is that every year they produce an A4-size card with the admin, sales and station phone number of EVERY airline that serve the UK. Across the top is a big ad for Finnair, but everyone else is on there too, and you'll see one on the desk of every travel agent throughout the Kingdom. Typically altruistically pragmatically Finnish. They're a GREAT people, I have a lot of Finnish friends here in south London (including the Finnair Heathrow station mngr, and my god can he drink, a trait shared by every single one of his countrymen).

Cedarjet is right. I have never flown on Finnair, but lots of my friends have and and they all said that the service was excellent. They have got 2 new A321s recently and are getting 10 more A320 family a/c.

They have quite good international network for such a small airline, all over Europe plus New York (JFK), Toronto (summer service only), San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, Beijing, Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok and Singapore. The domestic network is good too.

Finnair is also a member of the Oneworld Alliance. They had first a codesharing agreement with BA and finally joined Oneworld a couple of months ago.

Their MD11s are getting new business class seats with personal tv's etc. Also the service will get even better. At least OH-LGB and OH-LGC are getting also a new economy seating, in an unusual 3-4-2 configuration.

Phew, I wouldn't have guessed Finnair was that well known by foreign people, I mean I'm finnish also and I've flown it tens of times. I also think the service is good and planes are excellent.

Yes, Finnair is the national airline of Finland, and thye are VERY kind people. Their service is excellant, and for those safety card collectors like me, send you their fleet of safety cards.

They're an operation based on the Faroe Islands, aren't they? The name suggests a big fictitious intercontinental airline in a 70s disaster novel with 747s and stuff, but they've got one (or maybe two) BAe 146s, don't they? And that's all I know.

By the way, does anyone know whether any existing planes will be painted with the new colour scheme? As for the MD-80s, I think not, 'cause they're being phased out anyway, but what about the MD-11s or to-be-hushkitted DC-9s?

Also what's your opininion on the new livery? I think it definitely looks fresher than the old one, which is kinda 70's-ish to me, but I think they could've done a better job with the new one, too. Why use so much white? Why not polished "silver" instead of white? I know, I know.. you _have to_ have blue & white on a Finnish plane for some reason, but why not use *blue* more creatively - for instance different shades for a nice effect. (E g Estonian Air uses blue to a fine effect, their livery is one of my favorites.) I'm also not that fond of the stylized "f" on the tail - it looks like a wrench. In an earlier topic someone mentioned that painting the tail in a totally different color than the fuselage makes it look separate from the rest of the aircraft; this in my opinion is true with the new Finnair colors. Maybe it would work on a DC-9/MD-80 though...

They do only have one BAe 146.

I quess they belong amongst the smallest airliners in the world! Couldn't get any smaller, could they?

Finnair is of course well known, should be for everyone interested in aviation. Though interesting that mainly Europeans answered. What is funny (or interestinfg, any explanation from the finnish friends maybe?) is that they applied new but different color schemes to the B757s and the A321s. Now they have three color schemes flying around. They will also (or have already) receive ATR72s from TransAsia Airlines. And what is one of the nicest things from Finnair is these funny Santa Claus applications to some of their aircrafts in Winter.
And for Atlantic Airways, they operate OY-CRG BAe146 since years and I saw it in CPH. But I also heard they recently leased an aircrafts from Malmoe Aviation. maybe was to cover their flights while above was in maintenance. Also, CV990, nice to read your memories. Only started to see DC-9-51s (unfortunately never the -41s) and the A300s after transferred from KarAir. They are now gone to Air Scandic, well you all know that. But at least at the beginning there they still had partial Finnair colors! I saw the same for some of the Dc-9s that went to Aeropostal. Is that still current ?

As Richard Branson said when Virgin Atlantic started up with one 747, "This airline is either going to have the world's best safety record or the world's worst."

The Boeing 757 colours on Finnair are different from others because they are used on charter flights. The A321 colours (same as ATR-72) are the "new" look! I have no information though if they are going to paint MD-11s and MD-80s. I haven´t heard a thing about them.
MD-11 OH-LGC is in Moomins- livery now and it will be painted to santa claus again next autumn.

What's going to happen to the 757s? I assume they're going to be sold as more A321s come on line. But the 757s have only been at Finnair for a couple of years, making it a pretty expensive fleet plan. I've seen a few of the A321s lately at LHR and they look great, although that stylised F on the tail is a bit silly.
