Delta Using T4 Remote Stands At JFK

The last two times I've been to JFK I noticed that Delta is parking their aircraft at the Terminal 4 remote stands. Are they doing this because of an overflown at Terminal 3?

I meant to post asking about this, so thank you! My last few times at JFK there have been about five or so 767s parked at the T4 remote stands...I am wondering as well.

Yeah, I was very confused about it. I know El Al and North American usually use the remote space that Delta is using now.

I was thinking that Delta should take over one of those empty hangars at JFK and use it as a MX base for their 767 fleet as well as a place to park aircraft in between flights.

Not to mention that T4 is busier than ever this summer...It can get very tight in the afternoon and I imagine they could use the remote stands for airlines like Virgin, Royal Jordanian, South African that have long turns...

Yes, DL's international expansion, as well as tarmac/taxiway construction near Terminals 2 and 3 this summer, have meant that some of the 767s in between connecting flight banks have had to use the T4 remote stands used by LY. I do recall Pan Am using those stands as well back in the day - up to 2-3 747s were parked there in between flights, and sometimes, they even boarded flights there through the PeopleMovers. However, DL only uses them for parking spots and tows the aircraft to the T3 gates for boarding by jetway when flight time is near. Up to 4 767s (the 763ERs and 764ERs) can be parked there at one time.

Prior to this summer, the normal parking areas for 767s in between flights were:
- area near Gates 8 and 9 at Terminal 3 (still being used and can accomodate at least 2 763ERs)
- area near Gate 23 at Terminal 2 (currently not being used due to construction there and the new designation of Gate 23 as a DL connection gate as well; normally up to 3 763ERs could be parked there).

I flew into JFK from MCO on DL's new 764 service back in June and we waited about 45 mins for a gate to open, (we landed about 30 mins early) and there where DL 767's everywhere including around 4 or 5 remote parked including another 764. I do believe they use Mobile Lounges so that some can be deplaned and boarded remotley.

Cheers

Delta really should have invested in a new terminal at JFK back in 2000. They seem to really be filling that terminal to capacity sometimes. As much as I like the terminal in BOS, they should have invested in the one at JFK first.

Well, back then, the terminal would have cost $1.6 billion, which in the days after 9-11 would have probably balooned to at least $2 billion easily. Surely, it would have been a worthy investment, but at the same time DL might not have been able to fully finance the construction. That said, I believe even the planned model from 2000 might be have a hard time during the Euro push, as IIRC, DL only planned for 26 mainline gates, so there'd probably still be planes waiting for an open gate.

IIRC they (DL) are leasing those hardstands for the summer (could be longer). They have been doing so for months now.

I just flew DL into JFK from Europe this afternoon and noticed that they have essentially turned the whole Terminal 2 Gates 23-25 area into one big DL Connection playground. At around 4:45pm or so, there were about 16 DCI a/c (assortment of ERJs, CRJs, DH8s) parked in the area, with room probably for another 2 more or so. This whole set up looks to be better than the old one where many DCI flights were scattered all over and required taking those archaic yellow school buses out to the a/c; now it looks like passengers board at Gate 23 by walking down stairs, and then walking directly to their a/c.

Based on the sucess of this summer, DL will undoubtedly invest further in JFK beyond the cosmetic work they are doing now. I doubt seriously that they will replace the whole complex but they could very well proceed with adding another concourse, perhaps behind T4 which was part of what they originally proposed. I doubt if they will sign anything until the end of next summer so they have 2 sold years of performance under their belt but all the indications are that the JFK operation is doing very well - which means there will be more flights added. Until new gates are added, they will undoubtedly push the current facility to its max which may will mean using the hardstands for remote deplaning and boarding. Given that only so many gates are connecting to the FIS, they will be pushing the limits of the facility before very long. There is only so much aircraft repositioning that can be done without getting into the way of operating aircraft. But it's mighty good to see DL scrambling to find gates for all of its JFK flights.

The stands by Terminal 4 are being used as the gates with FIS are already pushed to thier max. As of late the early bank of flights have been coming late so not as many aircraft has been on the pads.

Wonder if DL could ever do something akin to what UA did when they first made IAD a hub - that is, build a make-shift "remote concourse" away from main terminal while construction on permanent facility was started. Not sure what kind of real estate is available, or funds, but anything would be an improvment over that eyesore, namely T-2.
