Yesterday I flew from SEA to Chicago. My flight was scheduled to depart at 3:10 PM. Because of the terror plot uncovered in London and new security measures implemented by Homeland Security, my airline (Southwest) advised me to arrive at the airport 3-4 hours before flight time. I got there about 5 hours early, and that was almost not enough. I had to check a bag, 90 minutes in line, and then I spent nearly 3 hours in the security line. At SEA they made us go to a lower level, cross a skyway into the parking garage, snake our way through the garage, back across the skyway, up to the ticketing level and finally snake through to security. There were LOTS of local police in uniform and surely many more in plain clothes. At security every carry on item was scrutinized, documents checked one more time, and passengers dumb enough to have any form of liquid, gel or paste still with them were moved to the side for special examination. A lot of us were travelling solo, so there were no bathroom breaks or a chance to buy a snack until we were in the gate area. It was the first time in a long while I saw lines leading to a men's room!

As it turned out, Southwest was holding flights to allow as many passengers as possible who missed their original flights to be rebooked. My plane arrived in SEA OT but we left 100% full about 25 minutes late. We almost made it back to Chicago on schedule but a minor medical emergency (there was an MD on board who tended to the sick passenger) and a passing thunderstorm caused us to arrive 18 minutes late. Considering the uncertainty with what was going on in England I commend the Posrt of Seattle, TSA and WN for taking charge and keeping a very bad situation from escalating into something truly ugly.

Yesterday I was UA from LAX-HNL and every terminal at LAX except T2 and TBIT has massive lines, UA had lines streching from the carpark building to the terminal, as did other terminals. Security lines in Terminal 7 was a breeze thou, it was only check-in that had the lines.

PIT had similar problems. If anyone is fimiliar with the airport, there is a moving walkway that connects the long term and short term parking to the landside terminal. There is also a Hyatt hotel located along the walkway near the long term lots. Anyways... the lines were way past the Hyatt which has never been seen before. Even after 9/11. Employees had to wait 30- 60 minutes to get through.... passengers a couple hours if not more.

I flew ORD-ATL yesterday morning, and it took under 2 minutes to clear security. I was amazed!

We were on the 8.45 am flight, so we got to the airport just before 6 am. What a waste!

We had called ahead to see if we could get on the 7.10 - turns out there were plent of seats and she said we could easily get on at the airport. We get to the airport and find out they had cancelled the 5.30 (crew issues), so over 100 people had to be re-accommodated. We ended up passed out in the crown room from 6 to 8.30.

We were real lucky with security though, because DL has it's own securily lines at one end of the the ORD terminal. We drove past the UA and AA terminal and saw thousands of people waiting in line. Ha!  Smile

Whenever I fly out of O'Hare I try to use the security in the L concourse just for the reason you said -- the lines tend to be very short compared to other checkpoints. I'm hearing that security times are almost at their Wednesday levels, although baggage check in times are supposed to still be a bit longer than before.
