Out of interest, and found it kind of humorous:
I am booking a flight on AC YVR-LAS-YVR leaving on Oct.11'06. After I selected my flights (Tango Fare, which is lowest), I clicked to go to the next step. The next screen popped up revealing "Go Discount - No Checked Baggage - Subtract 5.00 of fare each way." I had been checking and pricing fares yesterday, and did not get this message. I suppose they must have been initiating this offer just as the last days' events unfolded. Maybe they should reverse it, and give the discount for no carry-on!
Also of interest, AC charge $15.00 each way for advance seat selection when bookin the Tango Fare. Are there any other carriers that charge, or charge that much for such a service? Don't get me wrong, I am a big supporter of AC (risk of branded patriotic here), but when I booked on AS last month YVR-SFO-YVR, not only did I get a wonderfully low fare, I could even select my seat before I entered my Form of Payment. Again I am not dissing AC, but thought this might be of interest.
The only thing a customer should expect for his/her loyalty is good service

The Go discount is a savings for the airline,in that they do not have to process and handle checked baggage,or for that matter misplace it. So it can be good for both parties. The seat selection option is driven by the trade-offs associated by choosing to purchase the lowest possible fare type, which for some people, price is the most important consideration. How this option helps an airline,is that it allows more desirable seats to be available to those passengers that pay higher fares and have seat selection included in their fares. I'm not sure, but I don't think WS has pre-assigned seating, correct me if I'm wrong?

NWA charges $15.00 for advance seat selection is certain rows, ex: Bulkhead, Exit Row. Other than that the $15 surcharge on AC is peculiar to that airline.

I bought a GO discount Tango ticket to YVR on Wed (for travel next Wed) just as, or before, the no-liquids rule was being introduced. I rarely ever check my bags in but given the new no-liquid rules I will have to, so it will be interesting to see if AC will allow me to check in a bag with no extra fee given that I bought my e-ticket literally hours before AC (or Transport Canada) changed the rules for carry-on liquids.
Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.
I received an email from AC yesterday advising me of the new security rules. They addressed the GO Discount issue:
"Go Discount: Customers travelling on a Tango fare with a Go discount who have opted out of their checked baggage allowance may check in their carry-on baggage free of charge until August 17, 2006. The bag must conform to Air Canada carry-on weight and size limitations."
