It's an A330-200, registration A6-EAE (info from ACARS)...

Anyone know where and why??

Most probably due to lack of staff/stands/security/time at Heathrow!

I was going to suggest rain until I read the two posts above. I'm at LHR right now and it was ABSOLUTELY POURING here a little while ago.

I just got home from work at LHR and it was chucking it down with rain and a lot of storm cell's around! Loads of lightning and thunder going off, most probably the reason.

Airlines at LHR were being requested to cancel a third of flights, so it was probably being re-routed to either help out BAA or to get around the restriction. Virgin did the same - two of their flights (19 to SFO and 23 to LAX) are flying from LGW today and passengers who turned up to LHR were offered a free bus transfer to Gatwick, and the departure times were put back a few hours to allow them to get there, and to allow time for the aircraft to position from LHR.

Although im far from London i would guess by the above posts that the flight was diverted because of the weather. The flight is scheduled to position from Gatwick to Heathrow at 16:00 and then operate Heathrow to Dubai as EK30.

yes there has been a load of storm clouds above us here in North London, and been watching the movements coming out of the ockham hold from the east of us. Also got some wonderfull snap shots of the storm tower clouds with the sun reflecting of them using a sigma 300mm lens.

I noticed that all of the LHR inbounds at that time that were being held at Ockham and Biggin were leaving the holds and heading further north on a heading of 360 than they would normally to establish for 27L, in order to avoid the storm.

It is fair enough to say that due to the severe congestion and the extreme security measures taken by the BAA there are no more options but to diverte when poss some flights into LGW and MAN. Think about the incredible chaos it is LHR at the moment. At least this way some pressure is released from this airport. The weather conditions might have somo impact on this decision but do not think was the main reason.

EK 5 / 6 operated from Gatwick on Saturday.....arrived 4 hours late into Dubai on Sunday morning!. Can only presume that all of this is due to the ongoing security situation.

As illustrated by the two NOTAMs above, the diversion is an attempt to comply with a request by BAA to reduce operations by 30%. BA has cancelled several short-haul flights on Sunday and will continue to do so on Monday and Tuesday. For instance, there was no BA metal at all between LHR and BRU on Sunday and, as of my writing, only every other flight will be operated on Monday.

Airport security is simply unable to cope with the "normal" volume given the additional security measures.

and to allow time for the aircraft to position from LHR.

I am just wondering... A positioning flight from LHR to LGW... What would the routing be on such a short hop? And would it be under IFR or VFR rules? Well, IFR most likely...
Does anybody know?

Why is 10 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9.

Why choose BHX which is ages away?

14th August 2006, 08:00 Dubai.

The British Airport Authority (BAA) is restricting flights to London Heathrow to ease congestion resulting from the ongoing security measures at the airport. In line with this directive, Emirates will re-route one of its Heathrow flights today, EK005, departing Dubai at 1615 local time , to Birmingham. The return flight, EK006, originally scheduled to depart London Heathrow at 2230 local time, will now depart from Birmingham two hours later at 0030 local time.

Emirates is making every effort to inform affected passengers and we regret any inconvenience caused. All other Emirates services to London and to other UK airports are operating as normal, although it should be noted that delays of up to an hour are still being experienced on outbound flights from London Heathrow.

Do not forget that BHX is not goverend by BAA regulations concerning the reduction in services. We have two daily EK flights to DXB so the infastructure is there to handle the Aircraft. We are not really that far away (less than an hour flight) so it should not cause that much inconvenience.
