ADVISORY/American Airlines to Make Major San Jose International Route Announcement
(BUSINESS WIRE)--
BACKGROUND: As it develops its West Coast route network, American Airlines has made San Jose International Airport a focal point for growth and expansion, building on San Jose's robust economy, the high-tech leadership of the Silicon Valley, and the area's strategic geographical location. Two more points will be added on Dec. 15 with American's introduction of San Jose service to Maui and Miami. This will boost the airline's total operations at San Jose to 73 flights a day. Now, American is poised to announce important new international routes that will enhance San Jose's standing as a major international air transport gateway.
WHO: Don Carty, American's chairman and CEO
Mike Gunn, American's executive vice president of marketing and planning
WHAT: A news conference to announce important new international routes for San Jose International Airport
WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific time)
WHERE: Capital Club Athletics

Dear 757-767,
I second Ryu2's judgment call, and ask, where will SJC put additional international flights right now? Both terminals are over capacity, and the city conceded to NIMBY's an agreement not to begin work on "terminal B" until Route 87 along the northeast perimeter is finished. When I was at SJC a month ago route 87 was mostly dirt being leveled.
Maybe SJC will build another, larger customs warehouse temporarily?
With Silicon Valley's growth, though, the announcement isn't surprising. The Mercury News reports that area companies profits' were 33 percent higher in 1999 than in '98. American's early-90's hub may have been just a bit ahead of its time.

It would seem more logical to expand to Asia from SJC since AA doesn't really have an Asia hub like United has with SFO and LAX. The reason I say this is because a person flying from SJC can fly to ORD, DFW, BOS, or JFK to connect to a Europe flight; however they would have to backtrack or go to LAX or SFO to go anywhere else but NRT from SJC, (i.e. connect with a Cathay Pacific flight). And about the customs "shack". I can't believe AA is using this! Last summer, I went to Japan from DFW, but we flew home through SJC. It was my first time to SJC and I was expecting something a little more glamorous when pulling up in a brand new shiney 777. I mean, the "shack" was smaller than the plane itself. However, it was pretty cool to step off the plane onto the tarmac and to step back and look at that big sucker outside rather than looking at it through glass. Those engines are HUGE!

Speaking of CDG, I read off the planebusiness.com message board that AA plans on reducing the number of flights from LAX-CDG. According to this person, it'll be reduced to 4x a week and will become seasonal next year. Can anyone confirm this?

Probably not HKG, as AA doesn't have a presence there currently, and it will take significant time and expense to establish themselves there (establish an office, hire local employees, etc.) Besides, oneworld partner CX already flies out of the SFO, codeshare with AA.
If AA is adding Asian flights out of SJC, the most likely choice is KIX (Osaka) -- they already serve it from DFW, so they have a presence there already, and right now, there is only one Bay Area-KIX nonstop, on UA.

SJC is building a new 4 gate extension onto Terminal A. These will be international gates with a new customs inspection facility. No more trailer shack customs facility. If you go to SJC's web site you can view the airports master plan.

To those who think it will be HKG or LGW....
Probably not good to assume anything. We all know AA received the rights to fly SJC-CDG recently so that route is most likely to be announced along with one that most likely wouldn't be one of the two above.
Everyone has their guess on the what will be announced tomorrow, but my gut feeling is that it is something other than SJC-LGW or SJC-HKG. Possibly something new to their system? Any thoughts?

Has anyone considered Mexico? MEX perhaps? Other than Alaska's vacation flights to Puerto Vallarta and Mexicana's limited Guadalajara flights, there really isn't too much service to Mexico from SJC. It's really an untapped market, given the Bay Area's growing Mexican-American population.

As myself and my 3 other work buddies sit here in the AA DFW Cargo office watch in amusment.
We all know what the announcement is all about, Im not going to post in this forum for fear of it getting read by the wrong people. As me and my buddy here were in SJC last week going over some CAArgo details and were going to be in SJC tomorrow as well.
Hey cannedspam thanks for the free lunch, I Won the bet. I told these folks here you would reply with a "I KNOW THE ANSWER AND YOU DONT" type of comment.

Nice detective work. Will SJC be the full throttle gateway to Asia or is this a one-off route due to the economic ramifications? Any further expansion from US to ROC?
25 Raddog2: I am shocked! But excited...this is a very unexpected move...
26 EIPremier: I'm glad they're adding an extension to Terminal A. That horrible shack they use for customs right now would not go over well with passengers arriving
27 AA-SAN: Interesting... but what about getting AE service back to SJC??? I really miss having another option besides LAX or SFO
28 Lowfareair: Could one of them be SJU-PHL? My Dad has wanted that for years.
29 Flygga: Last I heard from the guys in the tower is that the new 30R is scheduled to open June 6th, 2001. When it opens, 30L will be closed for a much over due
