As is currently being discussed in another thread, the rare B737-100 has disappeared from our skies. I guess this is natural as they all date from the late 1960s, but there is a perfectly intact and potentially airworthy example in TUS. It is currently registered N772WH, and was withdrawn from use as a VIP transport by the Mexican Air Force two years ago, before being ferried to TUS. It can be seen in the picture above by the bottom left corner - just above the B727.

This aircraft was previously operated by Air Florida and Singapore Airlines (delivered to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines before they parted).

I wonder whether SQ would consider preserving this aircraft - not necesarily in airworthy condition - as the B731 was the pioneer design of arguably the most successful narrowbody airliner ever, and this particular example was the last of the 30 built. It is nice that QANTAS are celebrating their heritage by flying one of their former B707s from storage in the UK to a museum in Australia. I wonder whether SQ would consider the same for this B731...

Any up to date information on N772WH would also be appreciated - it is a while since it was last noted.

Does anyone else think this would be a good idea?

It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

I absolutely agree. This actually seems more justifiable than SQ doing it, as LH were the launch customer. To be really authentic, though, it should be an ex-LH machine. The only ex-LH one in existence now is an AeroContinente aircraft, and last I heard it was stored at LIM without engines, and has been for some time. I'm sure Lufthansa could get it airworthy again and fly it 'home'.

N515NA is on display in the Airpark at the Museum of Flight, across Marginal Way from the main museum building. It is appropriate that this plane is here, parked next to RA001(the first 747), Concorde BOAG, the first VC-137, and soon E-1 (the first 727), as it served as the prototype for the very popular 737.

Well, there goes the last realistic chance to preserve another B731.

Still, many thanks to the photographer for uploading these, despite how gut-wrenching they are to any classic airliner fans.

That sucks. I'm guessing about 30 years from now, people will pull their hair for destroying these birds.

I've seen plenty of DC-3's at museums and I think and the 737 should be just as important. It is the most produced aircraft in the world right?

The DC-3 defined commercial aviation and the 737 was the symbol of "modern" air travel since the 70's.

Sort of like "Noah's Arch of Aviation". Big grin I like your idea, but due to space constraints, a place somewhere in a desert would be needed.

I agree that the 737 holds an extraordinarily important place in the annals of civil aviation, especially the original model, the -100.

Though the 737 has been the most successful jet airliner of all time in terms of the number of airframes built...

...the distiction of largest production run goes to the Antonov An-2, an aircraft still in production after some 60 years and 15,000 or so airframes:

Led Zeppelin did indeed fly in a custom Boeing 720 equipped with P&W JT-3C engines shown above. It was appropriately called The Starship. Here is a link which inaccurately describes the aircraft as a turbofan-powered 720B.
