While the dominant airline at LHR is obvious (BA), how many slots does it have? How many does BD have? How many does LHR have all together?

I don't know about the number of slots, but BA has I think just over 40% of all the slots at LHR. BD is second in number of slots owned, but I haven't any idea how many. Hope that helps.

In 2004 BA had 42.3 per cent of LHR slots. BD was the second largest operator at LHR with 11.5 per cent of slots and LH (another Star Alliance airline) third with 4.5 per cent. I believe that VS (who only operate long haul flights) have around 2 per cent of LHR slots.

The BA presence was relatively small. The only major airports where the largest airline had a smaller share of slots than BA has at LHR are NRT where JA had 22.1 per cent, JFK where DL had 24.1 per cent and LAX where UA had 28.7 per cent. At the other end of the scale, unlike BA the US legacy carriers totally dominated their base airports. AA had 83.2 per cent of DFW slots in 2004 while CO had 85.7 per cent at IAH and DL had 74.8 per cent. There was a not dissimilar picture at major European airports. LH had 60.1 per cent of slots at FRA and AF 57.9 per cent at CDG (and 61.3 per cent at ORY) but KL had only 50.7 per cent at AMS.

Currently around 472.000 slots are in use at LHR. There is some slack with slots freely available at less popular times and theoretically if LHR switched to mixed mode operations the total number of slots would increase by over 15 per cent. However the planning permission granted for the construction of T5 restricts the total number of slots that can be used at LHR to 480,000.

oddly enough, AA has about 2% of the slots at LHR also..

according to a United States GAO (General Accounting Office) 12/2001 report, BA/AA control around 52% of United States-London nonstop flights and 61% of flights between the United States and LHR

Amongst other data you will find tables showing slot availability at LHR by specific day. (Most of the currently available slots tend to be available in the late evening.)

Not quite correct. While the "slot availability" public section only displays the top level runway availability matrix, if you click on any of those links the site links into the Online Co-ordination System (OCS) which can provide real-time slot availability information based upon all constraints in effect (runway, terminal, stand, curfew, etc...). You do need to be an approved airline operator to hold an OCS account. It is not intended for public use.

I personally swear by OCS - it makes life a lot easier when juggling schedules and planning ad-hocs. No more having to track down someone at Apron on weekends or out-of-hours.
