I'm flying on United Express from Chattanooga (CHA) to ORD next week. The flight is operated by Trans States, Inc. using ERJ145 equipment. I'm wondering if anyone has flown United Exp's Trans States flights who can comment on his/her/their experience(s)? Quid pro quo, Trans States only operates the ERJ145 for United on routes from ORD to Roanoke, Chattanooga, and Tri-Cities, TN, so I'm not sure if anyone really, er, has. Thanks for the feedback. BTW, see the current issue of Airliners Magazine for further reference.

If im not mistaken this service from ord to cha is fairly new using the ERJ145. I am traveling tommorrow morning on Trans States too, but im on TWE. I have a question how this work. I know this is the same company, does Trans states lease the equipment to united and twe or what? also why does twe on use the atr-72,atr-42, and the jetstreams 41 and 31 and united express use the regional jets.? Any comments on how this work would be appreciated

Ok, there were several questions in there...let's see...
Trans States operates the equipment itself, so no, it doesn't lease the equipment to TWA or United (or Delta, for that matter). Trans States initially wanted to operate the new ERJ145 on behalf of Trans World Express, but the TWA pilot contract wouldn't allow it. Plus, the airline just ordered a bunch of new 717s, so there isn't much of a need for TWE jet service. Trans States operates ERJ145s for UA out of ORD and for DL out of JFK. The DL service sees the ERjs flying from JFK to GSO and RDU. I think that Trans States leases from some leasing company all of its ERJ145s, actually, but it does indeed operate the feeder services on 3 contracts from TW, UA, and DL. Hope this helps, and have a good trip!

I'll try to explain how this whole thing with Trans-States works...
Most regional airline arangements are nothing more than code-shares. Most regionals operate service for the major, and the major puts its code on. For example, Trans States flies for many airlines, including USAirways, United, TWA, and others. Other regionals operate the same way, but only for one airline, such as Great Lakes flying exlusively as United Express. Because most regionals operate at a particular hub for only carrier, and because the regionals themselves do not market their services, they can paint their aircraft in the colors of that major, and passengers are none the wiser. That's why when you board an Air Wisconsin flight at ORD, there is no indication that you are not actually flying on United, except for a small notice painted onto the plane somewhere that says something to the effect of "Operated by Air Wisconsin".
Occassionally, regionals carry multiple codes at a single hub, and this can create identity problems. For example, in Los Angeles, Trans States operates as several airlines, and every one of their SAN-LAX flights is coded by US, NW, TW, and several others. In these instances, the airline must choose what paint scheme to put on their planes. Incidentally, the Trans States planes in LAX are painted like USAir old colors. I don't know if they are going to put them into USAirways' new colors or something else.
Notable exceptions to this codesharing practice are American Eagle Airlines, which is fully owned by AMR, and ACA, which Delta recently purchased.

I was reading today, a story in a magazine that said the TWA pilots union ratified the agreement and that TWE could fly express jets. This was recently ratified in 1998 and with the order for 15 EJR-145's and options for 12 more going to Trans States you have to wonder if United Express will get them all. Or will TWE recieve some even though TWA is soon going to be recieving their 717's?

I don't think that the fact that TWA is getting 717s would have any effect on whether TWE would fly ERJ 145s. The 717 has more than twice as many seats, and carries first class passengers. The two planes are not substitues, but complements to an airline's fleet.
