After some research, I didn't find any threads talking about this specifically. Before you send me to the guillotine, just write a link.....

But here it goes...I recently watched Flight 93 on DVD and my heart melted for the passengers and their family, as well as anyone who lost someone or was directly affected by the tragedies of 9/11. However, all I could think of while watching the movie was, couldn't the FAA, the UAL/AA command centers over-ride controls on the aircraft? I mean, we have auto-pilots, sattelites that give you up to the second feedback information, wouldn't there be some sort of ultimate command that the FAA/airlines can activate in order to take back control of the airplane and land it safely or God forbid, at least turn it out of more casualties? Wouldn't that make flying a little safer and less likely to be a mean for terrorism?

Cheers!

its a possibility but you got to remember the autopilot is like a computer it can be hacked

It would be that much more difficult, and take that much more time to mess with in that case.

I remember talking to an FX pilot about their aircraft. He complained about the A300s and said something about how the autopilot can actually lock out the pilot if the computer decided the pilot was going below a certain altitude etc.

Agreed, but I'm pretty sure sensitive information dealing with national security and so forth are stored in computer media. Just as long as similar diligence is performed, I think it would okay, no?

Cheers!

Not a bad idea, but I imagine you would need all the aircrafts being CAT IIIC to land them from a distance, otherwise I guess you would need to have a "remote" oparator ready H24 on a sufficent number of airports to cover the whole country, or have forward-looking IR (could happen at night) cameras onboard... hipotetically possible, but rather difficult to put into practice. As for simply diverting an hijacked aircraft from its intended target, if you have enough time to figure out what's happening, take control and crash it away... well, shooting it down would be easier...

If God had wanted men to fly he would have given them more money...

What are you doing Dave. This is highly irregular. Dave I'm scared.

This was discussed in some detail shortly after the events of 9/11.
It would be a tremendously expensive exercise to install in all aircraft and build the required ground infrastructure, to protect against an extremely rare and unlikely event. (Fighting the last war kind of thing rather than preparing for the next one).
There is the hacking issue, imagine if all aircraft were so equipped and some evil mastermind managed to take over or gain access to the control centre for such a system and commanded many or even all aircraft to crash into the ground. It would make 9/11 seem very trivial by comparison.

No thank you, I would rather see the 2 highly qualified folks up front along with their survival instincts!

If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Someday there will be pilotless airliners. But then some folks here wouldn't have anything to complain about.  wave

But there is a less expensive theory-

Simply put, if they can't get in the cockpit, they can't take the airplane.
Making sure they don't get there in the first place is the answer.

Too bad we had to learn that the hard way.
