Are there any operational VFW-614's left? I saw the prototype at BOS in the mid 70's on a sales/promotional tour of North America. From what I understand, very few were ever built and most, if not all, of these operated in Europe.

I do know that the Danish carrier Cimber operated the type for a period of time and I think I might have even seen pictures of one in German Luftwaffe colors.

The over-wing mounted engines made sense for operations out of unimproved airfields. This arrangement was pretty daring at the time and I was wondering if this was the cause of the VFW-614's lack of success.

I would greatly appreciate any information you could provide on the fate of these odd little birds.

Thanks,

EyeSky

The only three VFW's in airworthy condition were retired from Luftwaffe service in 1999. But now - in a very surprising move - Danish regional airline Muk Air has acquired these aircraft and wants to use them on its regional/ domestic network!
Sounds great from an enthusiasts' point of view, but I somehow fear that this will be the beginning of the end for this great little airline.

I have a soft spot for all things German, but I could never warm to the 614.
Anyone ever fly one? How about you, Preben? You're Danish, and everything.

I have seen the DLR (German Aviation research Institute) VFW-614 making touch and go's at HAJ (Hanover) a couple of years back and have to say it is fairly loud. I wonder if they comply to Stage III noise regulations without expensive hushkitting.

Thanks Tristar500 and LHMark for the info.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the 3 survivors. It would be great if we could get some good exterior and interior shots of at least one of the Muk Air birds on this website before they're put out to pasture.

What type of engines did the 614 have? I wonder if the Luftwaffe surplussed them because of Stage III requirements? They are probably in excellent condition.

Thanks again,

EyeSky
