Is Hawaiian Air Starting SLC?

Today I was in an airport restaurant, and WorldWide Flight Services which is taking over NorthWest Ground Services in SLC had some folks from Northwest at their table, along with 3 people from Hawaiian Air who had their ID badges out & they specifically said Hawaiian Air on them.
The conversations were mostly normal everyday lunch chat, but their conversation turned to the Hawaiian Air folks about "when your flights are serviced". don't know if they were just at SLC observing operations for another city or if they were here getting things in place.

Would be a logical new destination for them, but I think they'd need some new aircraft first, wouldn't they? Isn't their current fleet pretty well utilized to its maximum? Unless they ran SLC as an extention the SEA or PDX flights (SLC/SEA/HNL or SLC/PDX/HNL). That doesn't seem likely though as the SEA/HNL flight is usually pretty full at least in the winter months. I'm guessing the PDX flight is as well.

Hawaiian would be a good addition to SLC. Perhaps they're here to take the KOA route that DL is giving up due to lack of suitable equipment (ETOPs certified 752s forthcoming from TWA/AA). More competition on these routes (HNL, OGG, KOA) would also be welcome since fares to Hawaii are far from cheap on DL.

HA won't fly 763s into KOA from SLC. It would be HNL.

I don't think SLC could support that much more available seats to HNL on
its own as they say our DL flights average only 24% local traffic.

I don't suppose it's too outrageous to think of SLC as a tag-on from an existing flt to almost any California city or even LAS or PHX but I believe all of them have plenty of O&D traffic on their own.

I also think that with HA's scheduling (which could, of course, be changed) the stop-over point to SLC flight would be quite late at night, with a rather unpleasant arrival time in Utah, and the return (departing SLC) would be very early in the morning. You would virtually eliminate any chance of pulling some O&D traffic between SLC and the stop-over point.

I agree with Ikramerica, IF (very large IF) HA served SLC (or any new city for that matter), it would be only to/from HNL. However, I don't think there are available a/c or sufficient traffic for n/s service to Utah.

Historically, SLC-HNL was served many times as a tag-on from So Cal, as far back as Western who did it via both LAX and SAN, and more recently by DL via LAX.

Sounds like they were observing Worldwide. HA has been looking for other ground handling services at their mainland stations that are currently provided by DL (DGS). IIRC, DL may not be able to provide those services to HA for much longer.

HA would fly to SLC non-stop, if they decide to do so. The SMF market is large enough that HA will be adding a 2nd flight 4-times a week starting next year, when the 4 non-ER 763 are fully added to the fleet. Other than that, the schedule for a addon from SMF would put the arrival in SLC around midnight and would be pushing the max duty time for the crew.

Range and runway distance shouldn't be an issue, as widebody flights having been plying this route for a long time. What I have to wonder is why HA would select a route that is a major hub for another airline.

LAX and SFO both have enough O&D passengers to go around for all the airlines (UA, AA, CO, DL, NW, etc...). SEA and PDX might have some competition, but not like LAX or SFO, and SMF, SJC, SAN are virtually uncontested routes (except for AQ). Even LAS and PHX are still in the system, despite the break in the codeshare with HP/US.

DL at SLC, however, strikes me as a different situation. HA is going to have to depend solely on O&D traffic, whereas DL can count on connecting passengers. I hope they've done their homework on this!

Actually, they announced they were picking up 4 new 763's (ex-DL) back in Feb. Here's the press release. I don't think those have been placed anywhere yet, but even if they have, there's always the soon to be idle plane flying to American Samoa! (Ha! kidding, I hope).

SLC does seem like a good idea to me.

Actually we announced where the new routes would be in May:

I've heard rumors about SLC (along with a bunch of other places too) for a long time. It would be a good market, as there is a huge Samoan & Pacific Islander population in SLC. The problem is (as many have said) that we just don't have the planes for a new route. I suppose they could do the old shell game of cutting one route to three or four days a week while using the plane to go to SLC on the other days, but the has done nothing but piss of our passengers when we've done that before. Then again, maybe there are more planes on the way - who knows? Those of us at the company are always the last to know.  Smile

Interesting you should mention that. There is a huge population in SLC of Tongan & Somoan peoples. Recently the Tongan's had a celebration in
a SouthWest Part of the city, and one of the sponsors of the event was Hawaiian Air.

I believe it is the possibility of cutbacks by Delta either through job reductions or outsourcing that will make DGS not be able to have enough manpower to cover the HA contract.
