AS Crew Bases (question)

Does anyone know if Alaska still has crew bases in ANC and PDX? Any additional history would be appreciated, such as when they opened/closed. Thanks.

as a flight attendant base.
No crew base in PDX anymore for the flight attendants. I think it closed
about 2 years ago.

ANC is certainly an active, albeit smaller pilot base for Alaska Airlines. I'm not completely sure but I am fairly certain that ANC is also an flight attendant base. The most recent new hire pilots include 18 ANC based pilots with 4 on the 737-200 and the rest on the 737-400. Those are the two aircraft types that dominate the ANC pilot base.

PDX is a Horizon pilot base but not an Alaska Airlines pilot base. I am not certain if this is a flight attendant base for Alaska though?

I believe that PDX is also a flight attendant base for Horizon still, but I can't be certain on that.

PDX is a F/A base again. It was closed for 2 years or so, but reopened. Despite all the pilots that live in the PDX area, it is not and most likely will never be a pilot base.

ANC is a F/A base and base for all 737.

ANC: F/A, Pilots 737-200/400F/400 and NG's
SEA: F/A, Pilots MD-80/737-400 and NG's
PDX: F/A base only
LAX: F/A, Pilots 737-400 and NG's

The base never "officially" closed.

When it was announced that it would be closing- AFA and the company went to the table and came up with a plan for PDX to be a co-domicile of SEA.

An agreement was reached- and PDX- although much different- remained open.

No supervisiors in PDX, no Inflight crew room, no dedicated FA space at all.

PDX based flight attendants are 'technically' based in Seattle. They attend recurrent in SEA at their own expense if they have to stay the night- and must go to Seattle to solve any issues with their supervisiors, if required.

After the first agreement- the base shrunk considerably. However, people who want thier transfers back have received them- including many new hires!

EA CO AS: A mini-pilot base wouldn't be the worst thing for PHX either. But I can also see them looking into a Bay Area base with 4 airports (including SMF). But I hear this rumor once in a while, but keeps getting voted against.

Also with AS branching out to Mexico and the east coast, they should have some sort of base mid-country. Then from there they could continue to branch out the more places and grow even bigger. I would think Memphis?

We don't fly close to MEM and may never fly there. Also, you kind need a crew base where you actually have planes.

Alaska737: I'm 99% sure all QX bases are SEA and PDX only now. They had a BOI pilot base, but its been closed. They are looking into a LAX base, but there is just no room and prices are a little higher then QX would like to pay.

I don't expect to see QX in SNA anytime soon. There are not enough CR7/Q400 to go around and honestly I dont see any route that AS couldn't do with a larger A/C and get First class passengers.

Alaska would like to open a Flight Attendant base in PHX but has put it on the back burner for right now. I don't think it's being looked at as a Pilot base. They are also interested in opening a bay area base but, because the union is not interested in opening "mini-bases" across the system, it's not very likely. The company can open and close bases wherever/whenever they like, but they can not open satelite bases or make certain cities (OAK/SMF/SJC/SFO) "co-terminals" of another base without first negotiating that with AFA and AFA isn't interested.

ORD/DFW are actually flown by FA's at all bases. Mexico is a mix of LAX/SEA Pilots. There are overnights in Mexico that are flown by SEA Pilots, though not as many during the summer. Generally, LAX Pilots do turns in/out of Mexico when they fly down there.

ASFyer: I know. I just didn't want to spend 30 minutes explaning where everyone goes right now. I didn't think I need to be that picky! To time consuming....but yes the LA crews get the short end of the stick with Mexico, other then when they have CUN.

I don't agree with this. I would enjoy a trip like this... and I KNOW the PDX base would enjoy a trip like this (they have the worst trips in the system).

When I was at Alaska- a day like this is productive- and therefore you can make money. Most of Alaska's FA pairings are SO easy- and unproductive- that it's very difficult to make money.

Alaska adopted the same contract Southwest had some years ago. This included a 10 1/2 hour duty day. Nice! So easy- right?!?! Well- yeah... but you can't make money.

The problem, in my opinion, about Alaska having the same type of contract WN uses- is that Alaska's limited route network limits what FA's can do in any given duty period.

WN FA's can fly from OAK-LAX-ABQ-MCI-MDW in one given day. $$$ is to be made!

However- AS FA's are very limited. WN flies all over the country- making it easier to make the days very productive (and even have decent layovers where you can have some fun!) When I was there (at Alaska, not Southwest (which was not long ago) trips were closer to this:

LAX-SEA-OAK (layover)
OAK-SEA-GEG (layover)
GEG-SEA-LAX (back to base)

or:

LAX-SEA-GEG (layover)
GEG-LAX-YVR (layover)
YVR-LAX (home base)

Hmmm... very limited. Alaska flight attendants get paid 4 TFP (trips for pay) for any given day. LAX-SEA-GEG is 4 trips. If you flew LAX-SFO, you'd get 4TFP (see my point)? Therefore- these types of pairings are NOT productive.

Here is an example of a good trip (for pay reasons):

LAX-PDX-LAS-PDX (layover)
PDX-SFO-SJD-SFO (layover)
SFO-LAX-SJD-LAX (home base)

or: (here's a good summer trip the LAX base gets (or has at one time)

LAX-SEA-FAI (layover)
FAI-ANC-SEA-GEG (layover)
GEG-LAX-YVR-LAX (home base)

or: (my personal favorite two day in the winter)

ONT(co-domicle of LAX)-SEA-PVR (layover)
PVR-SEA-ONT (home base) My friend Chase likes this trip too!  Wink

These 3 are VERY productive trips. But- you are also tired as hell in some instances. Any trip of any sort that includes a CABO turn- is a hard trip. Cabo turns are NOT fun at all! Let alone 2 on one trip (example 2) .... ick. Trust me on this one..... (although I guess it is a matter of opinon).

Anyway- my point is that Alaska's FA pairings are good for those who do the job for the layovers. For those that want to make money- their contract limits that a little bit too much. Especially junior flight attendants.

The most senior trip at Alaska for the LAX base??? Daytime MEX or ZIH turn.

27 WeAreUnited : TONS!!!! A good portion of Alaska's flying is turns! Out of LAX- they have turns to SJD (ick), PVR, ZIH, MEX, GDL, LTO, YVR, PDX, SEA, MZT, and ZLO.
