I've heard it's supposed to be an eskimo, I guess you can consider him random. It's not of any significance that I'm aware of.

I remember one of my dad's friends telling me when I was a kid (growing up in Anchorage) that the fellow on the tail of the plane was a local ANC VP from the airline. As I recall, he said that when they did the new liveries for the four 727s they had the art all ready for totem pole, the sourdough and the onion domes but couldn't find just the right picture for the other idea, an eskimo in a fur parka.

According to this friend of my dad's (an executive with AS at the time, his name was Hal something... this was at least 30 years ago) they were going through the office trying to find a picture that they owned the rights to (as opposed to having to pay someone for their likeness or license a stock image), and found one of some company bigwigs in parkas at some remote Alaskan station. The ad agency took the photo, made it all contrasty (which turned the whitey bigwig into an eskimo in the process) and that was the picture they ended up using.

Now, this is all out of my faulty memory, told by someone who was probably rather drunk at the time, so take this story with a grain of salt.

It is the late great Johnny Cash.

Mosre A-net probaby will remember him for his song, "I've Been Everywhere" which was the opening music for the remake of the movie, "Flight of the Phoenix"

His name is Chester.

There is the rumor that he is named for Chester Seevek who was an Inupiaq who worked for Wien Air in Kotzbue to greet tourists, this however is just a rumor.

Abraham Lincoln

As a kid, I used to see the tails when coming into LAX but couldn't see the titles because the planes were parked and hidden most of the time, and the script was pretty hard for a small kid to read at an angle.

It was a long time until my brain stopped making that connection and saw an eskimo.

I think it's funnier when it's Lincoln!

PS - always looked like the Lincoln from Mount Rushmore, since it has such heavy shadows.

That "guy" as you called , is my mother.
Yes, I know, she may look a little "rough", but you know, it ain't easy to live in Alaska!

OK, seriously, he is a Eskimo. during the 70's ( I guess) AS had different tails, one was this one ( a slightly different version).

Changing subject, Canadian North livery is sponsored by Klondike bar?  Wink

It's not of any significance that I'm aware of.

Of course it's significant . . . it's the AS Logo . . .it represents AS roots as an Alaska borne and bred airline.

That's like saying the Kangaroo logo on QF aircraft has no significance.  sarcastic

There is an urban myth that his name is Chester, named after a real person but neither is actually true. He's just the likeness of an eskimo - none in particular.

I think he looks like Bob Marley, much more fun than a random eskimo!

IMO the AS scheme is one of the most inspiring out there, rare to see such an evocative image on the tail of an aircraft these days.

Cheers

Back when Leo Mullin was the CEO of Delta there was a rumor about buying AS.

Why did Leo want to buy Alaska?

To make em take the picture of his wife off the tail.

AS considered getting rid of the eskimo back when they were looking to revise their look. It brought howls of protest. I think Chester or whoever he is may be here to stay. I did like some of the other old AS logos, like the totem pole, onion dome church. Retro jets anyone?

Aspecially the ones saying that it looks like Bob Marley??? What kind of stuff are you smoking....
I have said this before on the forum here.....The person that the Eskimo on the Alaska tails resembles the most is the Actor John Laroquette....that used to play Dan Fielding on the sitcom Night Court.....
