Looks like the DOT has given tentative approval for the UA-DL NYC-LON route authority, allowing DL to start marketing/selling the new JFK-LGW flight effective Nov 15, 2006:

http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.c...m?documentid=411616&docketid=25517

AND, the most significant part, to me anyway  Smile, is that DL is using DL001 for JFK-LGW and DL002 for LGW-JFK! DL finally has a DELTA 001 and 002 after all these years!! And to imagine, it's actually for a JFK flight instead of ATL!! Hey Widget, are you sure you really aren't the Blue Meatball in disguise? LOL!

Anyway here's the schedule:

DL 001 JFK 7:05pm LGW 7:25am+1
DL 002 LGW 11:00am JFK 2:10pm

It's not that early - MAD, BCN, MAN, DUB/SNN, NCE, CDG, AMS, BRU, and FCO will all arrive between 1 and 2 this winter anyway...

That's my gripe I am tired of all of these early arrivals. There are only 4 crews early. We are running back and forth between 1240 and 1 everyday. Now there is one more to the list.

Ah, is that why my DL119 had to wait about 15 minutes before someone showed up to guide us into Gate 6 the other day?  Smile

Anyway, not all of those will be daily - MAN, DUB/SNN, NCE, MAD, BCN so hopefully that provides some relief...

Does anyone know if the MAN-JFK flights are staying during the winter or is it just a seasonal summer route only?

They will continue to operate this winter but at 4-5x weekly instead of daily, still with the 764.

Aren't DL European flights usually odd numbered east bound, and even west? IE:, 1 LGW-JFK, 2 JFK-LGW.

Indeed they are. DL 1 and 2 (and soon possibly 3-6) seem to be an exception for whatever reason.

Has Delta ever had scheduled flight numbers of 01 & 02?
The best I can remember is 10 being the lowest scheduled flight number.

Nope, from what I can tell, this is the first time.

The lowest so far was DL8 ATL-LGW, which intially was used for Delta's 4th daily ATL-LGW during summer season a few years ago.

That's very cool that DL001/002 will be a JFK regular soon! Anybody have any speculation as to why they chose JFK-LGW for this relative honor?

As Glenn Hauenstein said (in the press release below), it's the "world's most popular international route".....Even Delta in its infinite Southern-ness cannot deny the 001/002 honor to the NYC-LON route  Smile

Besides, after spending $13 million (and potentially up to $21 mn) on the route authority, they better commemorate it somehow....

Remember that there will be a second flight starting in the spring and DL has the right to fly up to 4 flights based on what UA previously had been approved for. Flights 3-8 could very quickly be filled up by additional DL flights.

Or maybe there are a few more BIG JFK destinations coming that could benefit from LOW flight numbers.....  Smile

Weeeell I'll be got darn!! You non-soudern typs juuuust loooove to think all us 'ers ignorant crakers are just fixin' to prooove wezz just as good as any of y'all yankee folk, aint' ya.

Jefferson Davis....give be a break. That dumb ass wouldn't give up even after his army did. To compare the modern south with the Confederacy is an insult. Now I bet your beloved Junipero Serra must be spinning in his grave everytime he sees a native American not being forcefully converted to a foreign religion, and then being rewarded by being enslaved and forced to build missions and military establishments for Her Majesty back in Madrid.

This weekend perhaps you can go on down to that little ole mission on Delores Street, or out to the Presidio and awe in the spector of slave labor. Don't forget to honor and revere this albeit edited history for all your kids to be spoon fed in school.

Unless I'm having a HUGE brain fart,

JFK-LGW is Eastbound, and LGW-JFK is Westbound.

Is it possible that Delta has been saving some or all of these flight numbers for yeasr for this route to come along? After all, they said they've been waiting years for this route ...  Smile

Yes. AA001 is JFK-LAX, and AA100 is JFK-LHR. PA001 was, IINM the westbound leg out of JFK of their RTW service, while TW001 -- at least at the end -- was STL-HNL.

and I think AF concorde was 001 002 between CDG and JFK. Although, I could be totally wrong on that one.

And the old UA 1 and 2 went through JFk as well too, didn't they?

25 Post contains images JFKLGANYC : "JFK has long been the USA's premier international gateway" I'll second that.

27 Post contains images MarkATL : Apolgy warmly accepted. Regional rivalries are cool. Been to any Dodger games lately?
28 OttoPylit : Not to mention the fact that upon the chance of getting the flight, even Gerald Grinstein referred to the JFK-LON route as the "Crown Jewel" of fligh
29 Planesarecool : Is LGW-ATL going down to 2x daily next summer? I was looking through the schedule and only DL12 and DL58 are being shown for next July, both as B767-3
30 B747-437B : That is all that is on sale until Delta is able to secure the additional slots for S07 operations. They are currently using the 3rd set of Atlanta sl
31 Panamair : The 777 will probably not return but I am sure that at least one of the ATL-LGW flights will get the refurbished 764ERs (with BusinesElite) next summ
32 Alitalia744 : so who's up for a quick weekend trip? LOL, I need a few more miles this year to secure Gold Medallion!
