Hi all:

I was browsing through AirMadrid.com and noticed that Los Angeles was added to their destination maps. Does anyone know when flights are presumed to start? I assume they are flying to LAX? Will these flights be bookable on the website? I was planning a short trip to Madrid at the end of November, maybe I can go.

Thanks

Joel

Supposed to be at the end of October twice weekly (We/Sa) with A330s.

Still awaiting DOT approval.

Hi LAXIntl:

Thanks for the notice. Looks like if they implement this service I will use it for Thanksgiving weekend and Christmas. It's a lot easier to head down to LAX from OAK and then off to Madrid. Always went through ATL before. Wow Wed/Sa works out well. The service onboard the aircraft looks good too. Easier to take WN down to LA. Hopefully this produces good traffic to keep up this route. Will it be LAX served or ONT?

LAX.

I'm not too convinced about the long term viability of the flight. Its also being launched at a terrible time, being winter.

As you probably realize there is somewhat limited demand from CA to Spain. Iberia tried LA service with several different routings without much longterm success. Hopefully Air Madrid can find enough Spaniards looking for a CA vacation to make it sustainable.

The scheduled Air Madrid's MAD-LAX flights have surprisingly disappeared from the Amadeus reservation systems. November 1st was the launch day for these flights.

The schedule was:

On Wednesdays (NM2131/2) and on Saturdays (NM2161/2):

NM2131/NM2161: dep. MAD at 4.30 pm, arr. LAX at 7.30 pm
NM2132/NM2162: dep. LAX at 9.30 pm, arr. MAD at 6.00 pm on the next day.

I read on a Spanish forum that it's still unknown when these new flights will be launched. The equipment for this route is an A330-200, but it is rumoured that the ex-AF A340-300 that will join Air Madrid's fleet in January 2007 (or later) could do some of these flights.

Does the A330-200 have PTV's in the economy cabin as the A340 does?

Problem with Air Madrid is that they're probably relying on mostly O&D traffic. Who knows, though, with a few well-timed connections (TLV for example) they might be able to pick up some more lucrative traffic.

Personally, I think that Iberia might actually have a chance to make this work again in the future, now that they've opened their huge new terminal at MAD and are transforming it into a superhub.

Looks like they don't.

It's safe to say that NM is so unpredictable, not even they know.  Silly

Hi LTU932:

Thanks for the pic reply, I saw the same photo and looked like no PTV's. Oh well, it will be nice to have a Spanish carrier come to California. Many people think there are not many Spaniards in California, but in San Francisco I see more moving in attaining jobs here. San Francisco is seeing more people moving in from France, Spain, England lately. Maybe this route will do good. I know Spain is a great place to see, I am Mexican-American and been to Spain 2x in the last 3yrs. Maybe I will go again soon, I hope the Latino community visits Spain and make this route successfull.

Just to confirm, none of Air Madrid's A330 have PTVs in economy.

Those red seats of the picture are on EC-IYB and EC-IYN, flew on them to SJO last year.

And also the MAD-MIA flights, which were bookable a while ago, are not available anymore (??). MAD-MIA was 4x weekly.

Flights were never bookable to MIA or LAX. They were in GDS as placeholders, but availability was 0 for all classes of service, so you could not book them. That would be illegal. NM should get DOT approval within two weeks. MIA and LAX are happening. They already have arranged a handler at MIA for the October launch.

Hi MAH4546:

Thanks for the news. It will be very excited to see Air Madrid serve LAX and operating service to MAD. I'm sad about no PTV's on the A330-200 but I Have my video IPOD to entertain me. Wow how cool getting to MAD without having to connect in ATL or the East Coast.

Update:

The start date might be pushed back a little to both Miami and Los Angeles because they still have not gotten government approval from US DOT. So a December start-date is more likley. Air Madrid has removed MIA/LAX from their website route map, but I was in contact with an Air Madrid rep today who told me that was only because people were getting confused as to why they could not book them, despite being on the route map. MIA and LAX are still a go, and they will sell tickets once DOT gives them approval.
