I know that some airlines have tride to turn HNL into a transpacific gateway, but what if an airline like NW, CO, or UA started flights from most major US cities(ORD, LAX, SEA, SFO, SAN, DFW, IAH, IAD, BOS, EWR, JFK, MIA, ATL, PHL etc..) and continued them on to Asian destinations which would be an advantage because more Asian cities(BKK, SIN, CGK, DPS, KUL, DEL, BOM, etc...) could be served because of HNLs location.

Many of you have said that this is unattractive because its too out of the way for passengers, but what if the airline did somehting like offer free stopovers in HNL for a day or two? This would improve the Hawaiian economy and make HNL more of a major airport not just serving tourists.

Trust me...it's too FAR out of the way. It adds hours to transpacific asian crossings. I think with the advent of longer range 707's, then 747's...Hawaii slowly dissapeared because it was uneccessary for fuel. Even the South Pacific can now easily be spanned without a stop. This is critical to attracting business passengers. A stopover...even in the islands...is not a draw for folks on business.
Qantas used to have an interesting little hub operation there to LA, SFO, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairs, Melbourne, and Auckland(?). It was dismantled for more nonstop service.

The Hawaiin market is unique in that it has some of the lowest yields of any route. Clearly this is because of vacationers and ff redemptions.
