Why No Surveillence Video?

Todays recent Comair accident brings to mind a question that's been on my mind since the AF A340 accident last August.

Why don't airports have cameras installed to just do a video loop of the runways and surrounding area? It seems this would provide SOME useful information to the NTSB, FAA etc when investigating.

I appologize if this seems stupid....I just thought I'd ask.

yeah, with a significant amount of accidents happening within 1km of the runway, this could be helpful

yeah - would be cheaper to just let us photogaph planes more easily! save on installing the CCTV - plus better quality images. In fact, the two films of concord on fire were done by passers by, one of which was a spotter!
