Why Did It Land Here?

Wellington, New Zealand (WLG) has only have had one 747-400 land here.

Our airport is not capable of 747-400 operations, only 747-SP's with a restricted payload (QF used to operate them SYD/WLG/SYD).

A flight from LAX to AKL was diverted to CHC as AKL was closed because of fog and the UA Captain advised that the flight wouldn't make it to CHC as there wasn't enough fuel ( which I find weird - I thought there was always a lot of extra fuel on board - AKL/CHC is only 60 mins in the air!).

The pilot landed the flight at Wellington, using the whole runway I believe, and then when the flight was to return to AKL they had to take off all the passengers and all the freight so that the aircraft would make it off the ground to get back to AKL.

Can anyone give any more info on this? It happened about 4 years ago.

According to the FAR's you only need fuel for another 30 minutes day time 45 minutes night.

When then only carry 30 minutes extra fuel when the closest airport to cope with the aircraft is 60 minutes aways?
