Air Travel's Best Kept Secret (PanAm)

Pan Am are really starting to become something of a contender, having recently added Allentown, PA, their 7th destination. This in addition to the regional expansion of J31's out of SFB and PSM to eastern Canada and Florida destinations shows the airline is really going places.

They offer totally refurbished 727's and J31's with 37" seat pitch, warm cookies (FOOD!!!!) and hot towels on all flights, and they are a LOW FARE carrier.

Why does everyone make such hype over JetBlue? Is it because JetBlue is "cool" and the Clipper ain't???!

As a person who has flown Pan Am to the South Pacific, Europe, and remembering me and my mom picking up my uncle at SFO coming from the war in Vietnam aboard the Pan Am flights from Tokyo, it just is not the same airline. I wish they would just let the name rest in many peoples memories of what a great pioneering airline it once was. Allentown, PA? I havent' followed the "new" Pan Am, so I'd hesitate to ask what the other six destinations are..Not trying to be criticizing Mr. Chieftain, it's just I have such good memories of that airline, and any young aviation enthusiast now who loves Delta, American, United can sympathize with those of us in our 30's and up who felt the same exact way about Pan Am once...

The other six are: Portsmouth, NH; Pittsburg, PA; Gary, IN; Sanford, FL; MidAmerica, IL; and Bangor, ME; which are the secondary airports for: Boston; Pittsburg; Chicago; Orlando; St. Louis; and Bangor, with Allentown being PHL. They are the only scheduled pax. flights out of Gary, Portsmouth, MidAmerica, and I believe the biggest scheduled out of Sanford.

PAN AM's plan for success hinges on utilizing second-tier airports. In the case of Gary, Mid-America, and Portsmouth, there is ZERO direct competition. (I read on this forum that they're only packing 40 or so Pax per flight into the PIT-PSM route. I don't know how accurate that statement is, but I could see where it would be the case. PSM is a haul from Boston).
JetBlue is going toe-to-toe with the big boys on their turf, at least in the east. JFK. ROC. BUF. MCO. These are "price war flashpoints." Granted, the financing and business plans for blue are substantially different than PA, and the carrier fills a different niche, but everyone wants to see Blue establish themselves and succeed.
I welcom Pan Am and would love to see them start service to ROC. I could DEFINITELY see them beginning a Portsmouth-Niagara Falls route. I wouldn't be surprised if they were already considering this. I'm just happy the name is alive in any incarnation, and I'd love a chance to see those beautiful clippers in the sky over my house.

I applaud the efforts to try to restore Pan Am. Yes, they're not the same airline they once were, and they may not be ever again, but as they continue to grow and add cities, it becomes all the more interesting. Just how many secondary markets can they fill? One would think thatflying from secondary market to secondary market would mean a loss in the number of passengers, but I had heard of sold out trips from Gary to Sanford. Not bad!

I will be patiently waiting to see just how far west they expand, and am more than willing to give them a try should they reach the Pacific Coast.

I still think Portland-Hillsboro airport is a great option for them if they ever get out this far. It's located on the fastest growing side of the city, has decent renway length, and currently has zero passenger service. It would be a wonderful west side alternative to PDX.

What is the range of those old 727's? Can they make a trip like, say... Burbank-Sanford nonstop?

I would like to see PanAm start some upstate NY flights, to Sanford perhaps. I think they would do very well at SYR or ROC or even BUF! Theres a dearth of low cost flights anywhere up here and cheap flights to Orlando or even Boston (PSM) would be huge! Lets get those politicians over to Fink!
