Qantas And Their 747s

i was in LA the other day and i saw a whole bunch of qantas 747s. i know that part. but than i looked at the engines, and saw that some had rolls royce engines and some had i think PW/GE engines. why does qantas have two different engine types??

i tried to reserch this, but i didn't find anything helpful.

Some of the later ones they purchased did not have an RR engine available for that thrust class, they also purchased some second hand aircraft which were not RR.

Basically QF (International) have two engine types for their fleet (NOT including A330). The 743s & 744s were delivered with Rolls Royce engines.

The 767-338ERs were delivered with GEs. Later on QF purchase three 744s second hand which had GEs, which are basically the same as those on the QF 767s. Then they ordered the B744ER which only comes with GEs, but still basically the same as the 767 have.

Then QF leased 6 B767s from BA which had RR engines, basically the same as the B743s & 744.

So QF still only have two engine types, but they can be found on both 767s and 747s

We purchased three second hand aircrafts during the Asian crisis...

Two of MH and 1 off OZ.

The other options are the 747-400ER these have GE engines if i am not mistaken. The rest of the 747-400 fleet have RR.

According to Boeing, any one can interchange 767 engines and 747 engines as long as they are the same engine models. So, QF probably does do it, along with every one else who has 747s and 767s.

Sorry for correcting you >Gemuser but Qantas have 7 British Airways B763 aircraft on lease VH-ZXA,XB,XC,XD,XE,XF & XG..... Big grin

please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that their RR engines are for the 747 400 and the GE are for the 747 400 ER....
So I assume the use the ER for the slightly longer hauls...

I had the honour to be on the RR powered one from LAX to BNE and on my way back on the GE from SYD to LAX

Great aircraft...too bad that the entertainment system was not working to its full (on the return only) ..so I could still see the movies but not fast forward or have the extensive variety on demand.

Yes thats correct but there are also the 3 second hand 744's that are also powered by GE's.

I think most airlines that fly ETOPS do that. I know that NZ does that... new engines go on 767 first then go to 747. Is safer that way since the 767 only has 2 engines after all. Now that 767 are on the way out at NZ and NZ has GE spares I don't think they are getting any new engines..so its a bit of a mute point. QF on the other hand has truckloads of 767s and they aren't replacing them with 777 and are holding out for the 787 2009->

Yes QF do interchange the RB211G/H-T engines between the 744 and 763. It is a sensible option to operate them in the H rating on the 767 and then put them on the 744 in G rating when they get a little tired, however I'm not sure if that happens in actual practice at QF.

As the RB211H-T engines that came with the BA 767's have some minor differences, I can confirm that they are now spread across the 744 and 767 fleets.

The GE powered 767's all bar VH-OGV have non fadec engine's and are incompatible with the GE 744 fleet.

thanks mate, Just as a remark Qantas has an excellent fleet and service. I was very impressed with their service ....

I hope they keep up their excellent work. cant wait till they get the A380!!!!

I will try to make a report on my recent trip o Australia, I had such a good time!!
