The lack of TSA service is potentially going to cost MTH scheduled service before it even returns.
Continental Connection's service to Fort Lauderdale and Tampa, set to start in late October, is on hold indefinitley.
Delta Connection's service to Atlanta, set to start 1 November, is on hold until 16 December and will only start if they get TSA agents.
And American Eagle's never announced MIA-MTH proposed ATR service (nothing more than reponse to CO, most likely), which was looking like a Jan07 start date, isn't happening either. Too bad, because they need places to send those ATRs.
Horton said the TSA denial came as a shock, considering the airport was the recipient of a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to lure commercial service and that the TSA had been working closely with airport officials on the design of checkpoints and the schedule for screeners.
''At no time before did they indicate they would not serve us,'' Horton said with a sigh.
For the price of the 25 TSA screeners in Key West, the county could pay for the 41 screeners needed for both airports -- if the screeners came from a private company. That would require TSA to allow the Keys airports to join the Screening Partnership Program, of which only five other airports nationwide participate, including San Franciso and Jackson Hole, Wyo.
