SouthAfrican A300 In Daytona Beach Today!

I am an Embry-Riddle student and heard a few rumors that they were gonna fly a few older airliners to the Daytona beach Int'l airport and scrap them out. Well today after getting out of my last class I saw large tail sticking over a few buildings. Anyway I drove down by the airport to see a very clean looking A300 all white with the words "The love plane" written on the side with many pictures painted on the left side only. Well thanks to the very accessible DAB airport I was able to get literally 50ft from the aircraft. After standing around for a while the APU fired up and then eventually the huge engines were started. The aircraft then taxiid and turned the tail facing the open runway and grass areas. I was kinda curious as to what they were doing, then all of a sudden the engines started spooling up all the way to full throttle. I have never been so close to a heavy jet at full throttle like this. To briefly describe my experience was "tornado force winds" and "ringing ears for hours" It was the most exhilarating experience in a long time. The grass was blowing soo hard behind the jet I couldnt believe it. After done with the run-ups they followed a truck sadly to the aircrafts final resting area. I later found out the plane was to be broken up and parted out here at DAB. The tail numbers of the plane are ZS-SDC and there are a few pics here on Airliners.net one even with the Love plane paint scheme. I still cant believe this plane is being parted out specially considering it looked brand spankin new. If anyone has any information about the planes coming into DAB I would greatly appreciate it because I am very curious as to what else is coming in here and when.

Where abouts on the airfield is it? I might drive around and try and find it and have a look. (I'm also at ERAU)

The aircraft is now parked over near the control tower. There is a small road you can use to get to the control tower and you can get a pretty good view of it there. One side of the aircraft is completely white, and the other side is white also but the special "The Love Plane" scheme still remains on it. When the aircraft was doing its run-ups it was in-between the Jet Center and the airports terminal. I was told more airliners will be coming into DAB with the same type of situation. If the other aircraft do the same as the A-300 did then you can get VERY close to the aicraft if you head over by the employee parking for the terminal by where the Delta Jets park. Bring a camera because thats the last time these aircraft ever will ever move

yeah it rests in the same general area as them old prop jobbers by the tower. Just go out near the airfield guys you cant miss the thing. The tail nearly sticks up as tall the control tower

Very sad-I flew twice on ZS-SDC.
SAA now have 737-800s to replace the A300 but
they still have A300 on fleet.
It is a wonder no freight co has not bought her as
she is in great shape-Well maintained
Please let us know guys what else comes into DAB

Airbus A300B2K-3C (built 1976/7)
ZS-SDA Blesbok
ZS-SDB Gemsbok
ZS-SDC Waterbok ("The Love Plane") // scr 09/2000
ZS-SDD Rooibok

Airbus A300B4-203 (built 1981/2)
ZS-SDE Springbok
ZS-SDF Eland

Airbus A300C4-203 (built 1982)
ZS-SDG Kudu (cvtd to freighter early-90s)

Airbus A300B4-203 (built 1982/3, ex-SIA)
ZS-SDH Bosbok (bought 1985)
ZS-SDI Steenbok (bought 1987, sold 1991)

The 3 newer pax B4s will probably be converted to freighters, but the other 3 remaining older pax aircraft, being B2s, are all likely to suffer the same fate as ZS-SDC.  

If I remember correctly, the eight A300s were to be split between Boeing and GE as part of the trade-in deal on the new B737-800s.

First off I have to either go to the bookstore or the store next to K-Mart on Int. Speedway and get me some binoculars and a camera.

If it's by the tower you can see it from the Lehman building, right? I might wander over there first (It's saturday and I have nothing to do) and then drive around.

PS. In your other post about Purdue vs. ERAU, you talked about when an MD-88 takes off everyone stops and looks. It was really cool the first time that happened to me... I thought I was the only one who looked at every noise!

Last night when I was coming back to my apartment I decided to take the small side road which goes to the control tower and a few other buildings. You infact can get a very good view of the aircraft here. I dont know the names of the roads but it isnt very hard. Just drive around airport and you'll find it. The airplane can be seen from some areas of the school but it will be far away. Unfortunately, I was told this A300 will be totally disassembled in about 2 weeks. And I was also told they are highering ERAU students to help in the process. I am going to be looking into this, but im sure they are only looking for students in maintainence programs. I would love to get my hands on that plane. Well I will certainly be looking to see if anything comes in throughout the days and I will post about them if I see them.

Thanks TrnsWrld. I guess that they probably wouldn't want a Freshman anywhere near the airplane, but I sure would love to get involved in its dissmantling too.... let us know if you hear anything! Thanks.

I may look into it too. I guess going to the Maintenance building and asking??? I'll find out on Monday and let you know if I find anything out.

If you guys find out about them hiring riddle students to chop the thing let me know i most defently will be over there cutting gorch in hands... i hate to see a plane die like that but would defently like to take part in it... I think its sad to see a beautiful bird geting choped but still would have fun chopping weird isnt it.. i drove over about 230 am sat morning and there was another guy over there taking a look too.. i went up beluve extension and pulled into where the control tower parking lot is

"The Love Plane" was the last plane I flew on. I find it hard to believe that are going to scrap her. She was immaculate both inside and out. I sat jump seat for the last 35 minutes of the flight including the landing. I seem to recall she had done ±46 000 hours at that point.

I always look up when the A300s (and all the rest come over). The Love Plane was always very recognisable with all the pictures down the left side. I had noticed she hadn't been around in a while and I thought they had maybe removed the pics and that she was back in a standard colour scheme. Now I know.

Well, whatever she's here for, she's in for the 'long-haul' - pardon the pun. Even now, they've stripped her of her registration and all that remains of any text it would appear left on her. (She still has the basic design, less titles and tail logo.)

This morning, all four doors on the left hand side were open (I can't see the starboard side from where I am) along with all lower-deck cargo doors. This afternoon, the only open door is the 1L door with a set of airstairs up against them. (Obviously, as it's a bit of a strain on your back when you take one step out of the airplane and you land 25 odd feet below)

I stood from the walkway over Richard Petty Blvd. and looked at her from afar - my car is too far away for me to be bothered to get into and drive around there. But I will do tomorrow.

I'm gonna find out as much as I can from whomsoever I can either tomorrow or Monday and I will let y'all know what's happening to it ASA I get the info.

What I don't understand is the A300s supposedly had D-checks done on them not so long ago (as in the last year). These checks reputedly cost some R12 million (that roughly US $1.7 million) and extended the service life of these aircraft by a further five years. As they were fully paid for, the aircraft were considered money printing machines. Boeing only offered SAA US $375 000 per aircraft as a trade in on the 737 800s. Is ZS-SDC being scrapped simply because it's an Airbus?

I call shotgun on the altimeters and Attitude indicators! And hell, I can shotgun on the captain's yoke too!!!!! And anything else that isn't bolted down. (How about a rudder and JT9D??)

Yeah my dad used to fly L-1011s for Delta until... 1995 or 1996 I think. He gave up when the MD-11s went onto Transatlantics and then became an accountant in London... (whoo hoo...) (My mom told him to 'get a real job' - something many people on here, him and I didn't take kindly to!)

Yeah I think I agree I call (more) shotgun on one of the First Class seats and also a service panel... but I won't steal them from you either!

I think my dad could get used to me turning up at home (near KAAF) with a JT9D (if that's the type of engine it has...) SAA F/C seat and a Control Yoke. He'd take them from me! I would definately try to get an altimeter or something! Just need to buy more land to put the engine on.

Anyways, later y'all. It's saturday night and I WISH I had something to do.....

A little while back I saw an article that said that the going secondhand price for an A300 had gone up from around US$7m to about US$14m, on account of them becoming popular for freighter conversions.

The price those SAA aircraft were sold for was ludicrous, but that's the how it is with SAA these days ... consultants Bain & Co apparently did the number crunching and said it was the way to go, so Coleman did.

That said, I don't think there would have been any takers for those 4 A300B2s anyway - there are very few B2s still in service worldwide, and those retired recently all seem to have had an appointment with the scrapman on retirement. Just no market for them, I guess.

I hope things turn out better for the B4s.

Why dont we all take a ride up to ATL and we can go scrap N863DA thats a beautiful bird though... i wouldnt wnat to touch it... The first time i saw it in ATL was over @ E .. I think it wears the new delta livery very well.. Did someone say they were flying other birds into DAB to get turned into beer cans? Are they starting an aircraft recycling service over tehre... Maybe a DL L-10 would end up there eventualy... Though i woudlnt touch it .. I have 2 much respect for the L-10 and would hate to see it go (even if i have much love for Airtran) The L-10 brrings back days of Crown room clubs for only the elete, "flying colonels" roomy interiors with 70's style seats.. omega naviagiaton... anyways enough reminissing im not old enough to remember half that stuff though i do remember pawlberry punch and Dusty the Delta AirLion..yes im bored its saturday night nothing to do.. Airtran has its big end of summre bash in MCO tommorw though..

My dad refers to 777s, MD-11s and even 767s as 'new technology' - a bad thing in his eyes. I guess when you've been flying something for a while and you get to like it you get kinda stubborn. (I hope I don't get that way with the Riddle 172s when it comes time to fly the Mooneys.....) Coupled with the fact that reason he left was the MD-11.... yup, definately stubborn.

My dad would crucify me if I helped dismantle a TriStar. (Living with any old people is hard enough without destroying 'their baby' - and I don't mean another sibling either because he could probably live with that.)

Fly any airplane, except ZS-SDC because once we get near it it won't have any altimeters, F/C seats or overhead bins (or it may be missing at least one JT9D and the APU....) The only things I remember out of your list are Dusty the Delta Air Lion and a very dishevelled Crown Room / Int. First/Biz class lounge in Atlanta's T-Gates when they were still the international concourse.

Later y'all - I NEED SOMETHING TO DO! Dismantling an Airbus 300 would be perfect right now.

there is a cutting torch locked up behind the fence out here in Chanute... I have an ATL airport badge and an Airtran employee badge.. its dark no one will notice it says ATL and not DAB... wanna go 4 it

Dang boy! What you waiting for? Get over here with that damned torch! I'm sure that the books exaggurate (sp?) the weight of a JT9D. It doesn't look THAT big, I'm sure could manage to get it all the way back over to the dorms. They wouldn't notice either, I bet. (take the pylon off and we can roll the damned thing over here!)

Later y'all and I really am exceptionally bored now. I will find out all I can when I can. Gotta go get some exercise now as it's the most exiting thing I can think of doing.
