Starting today, NH is offering a ticketless, boarding pass-less option for getting on a domestic flight.

The service call "Skip" (NH's Skip pageJapanese only) allows passengers to make a reservation from home on their computer, skip check-in at the airport, swipe their IC chip cell-phone or IC embedded ANA Mileage card over a reader to confirm, then swipe again at the gate to board.

The system will cut paper use and man power on domestic carriers.

If one has check-in baggage, they can do it from a e-terminal.

Commercial for service in Japanese

Ito Misaki is talking with her friend and casually goes through security (still on her cell...yeah right) swiping her ANA card along the way. Then she sits on the plane and says "Norechatta" (I boarded) in a surprised voice.

The same commercial was done with a classic actress Mori Hiroko.

This is the future of check-in! No paper no staff what so ever.

The girl in that ad is cute. But yes, it's a very good idea. But the non-frequent flyer will essentially find it useless.

I can see your point as it is most beneficial to them. But the product is not only tied to the ANA card member but to EDY IC cellphones (Vodafone, DoCoMo, AU/KDDI). Meaning anyone who wants to take a domestic flight on ANA can use their mobile to buy a ticket, check-in, and board.

NH might even move to a process where if a domestic package tour uses NH flights, the passenger can choose an option of using their cellphone instead of a paper ticket or itinerary. This saves money for travel agents and NH.

The EDY mobile is currently used by many for shopping and as a trainpass in the Tokyo area. NH started EDY ticketing last year (buy on your mobiel, check-in with your mobile using a e-ticket unit.)

I am not a frequent flyer but would use this to limit my paper and things to carry.

How would someone get through security under this system?

Prior to September 11th and shortly thereafter, Delta Air Lines passengers with SkyMiles Silver Medallion and higher could use their SkyMiles card to board the aircraft. I did this all the time.

I believe that SAS and American Airlines have both formerly had programs in which passengers could use a credit card--the one they used to purchase the ticket--to board the aircraft.

But the USA is amid an endless, escalating security paranaoia, so I doubt that we'll see this technology here for the foreseeable future.

AA also had the same program as DL, swipe your AAdvantage Gold card or higher in the boarding pass reader and board the plane.

JAL introduced this service in Februry 2005 on a limited basis, then to 44 domestic Japanese airports in April of 2005 - the system is called "Touch & Go".

Interesting how we never see commercials about it...

Yet they beat NH by over a year! NH has a reputation for being so cutting edge yet in many instances they do things that JAL had already been doing. Its funny watching these two go at it!
