SJD; Is Cabo Going To Be Like CUN Last Year?

As of Thursday evening (08/31/2006), SJD shut down due to the approach of Pacific Hurricane John, a storm that was bordering on SS-3 status and was forecast to make a direct hit over the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. How fast can all the carriers restore scheduled service or arrange any special flights out of there once the storm has effectively passed? How much damage is there to the resorts and beaches at both clusters (CSL &SJDC)? Is Cabo San Lucas going to be in as tough a shape going into the winter high season as Cancun was last year?  crossfingers

Not a chance. Cancun, which I have visited recently, did a fine job of rebuilding after the devastation down there, but parts of it still look like Beirut after the civil war. Part of this is because some owners of mediocre hotels decided to rebuild better than before, and getting the money and workers to do that takes time. When I was there, the Meridien, where I stayed, was pristine and beautiful. You would never know that a hurricaine had come through. Unless you looked two-hotels-over at the Ritz-Carlton which, even then, was in bad shape despite workers crawling all over it, or one hotel over to the right, which was a formerly-crappy hotel that was being stripped to the bare concrete before rebuilding better than before.

In short, the hotels that were open (about half then, and many more now) were just fine, and the closed ones looked terrible. Most of the ancillary businesses were open and operating just fine. But, as you note, it took time.

Weather reports that I have seen and local reports indicate that the damage to Cabo won't be anything like that.

Lets hope so. Cabo is a very popular wintertime sun destination for those of us in the western US, but also many Canadians hang out down there as well. SJD is only a 3 hour flight at the most out of SLC and there is no time change since it is on MST/MDT. It looks as if PVR and MZT only received glancing blows.
The storm will undoubtedly dissipate as it hits the cooler water that begins to effect the climate not to far above Cabo, but during an El Nino year like back in 1997 a storm like this could actually make it all the way to San Diego, Orange County, Long Beach (a tropical storm hit there back in 1939) or Los Angeles.

All Alaska Airlines flights canceled today and tommorow. ATIS is making thing look bleak at SJD. La Paz looks a little better.

LaPaz being on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja. We'll have to see what the damage will end up being.

UPDATE It looks as if Cabo avoided a direct hit, and the center of the storm has advanced up the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula
Big version: Width: 970 Height: 535 File size: 29kb
Hurricane John 09/02/2006
Chances are the storm dissipated as it interacted with land before it went right over the top of LaPaz. Hopefully everything in Cabo can get back to normal quickly, SJD being one of the big tourist stops for a number of carriers from the US and Canada bringing people and dollarsign to Baja!
