What Happened To NW44 Last Night?

For some reason I was looking at the BAA Gatwick site, and it was showing that NW44 was expected at 15:40. I looked up the flight on Flightaware, and it showed that it turned around somewhere over Canada, and I guess went to Duluth:

I havn't seen any flights from Duluth to LGW, and the DC10 flights out of Duluth are showing delayed. Why wouldn't they just come back to MSP or is there a MX base at Duluth?

You think it was odd last night..? Right now it looks like it's up for a test flight and then headed later to MSP... then back to Duluth.

They reported smoke in the cabin.

I flew NW44 in January of last year, and late in the take-off roll, and early into the climb, there was an odor that was smoke like. I looked around to see if any one else smelt it, but didn't see any funny looks.

I just looked at Flightaware again for the same flight, and it looks like the plane just went absolutely crazy for 3 hours - the link above.

I doubt the flight track over the Canadian segment is correct. I've seen a few cases where Flightaware will do that. I knew a crew that was ferry a plane between two cities and it showed that they made the trip 6 times without landing...!!

Nice, they should have shown it to the boss, so they could get paid 6X for the trip.

Wow that has to suck. 10 Hours in the plane to end up just going back to MSP. In the time they could have gotten to London, taken a nap, had some breakfast and gone out to shop or go to work and have been out for a little bit, but instead they went to Duluth!

They shut it down last year, right before the mechanics got locked out.

Local news is reporting passengers were on the aircraft for 10 hours because of what NWA said was "airport facility reasons". According to WCCO's newscast tonight, Duluth airport staff deny this and a mobile air stairs is seen connected to the aircraft right after landing. Apparently pax were flown back to MSP on another DC-10 10 hours later. Let's see... flight from MSP-LGW $600, car rental and gas from Duluth to MSP $60, getting stuck on a 40 year old rustbucket with 300 of your closest friends in Duluth, MN - priceless. When will this end?

The last sentence in the KSTP report is something that everyone says often, but somehow manages to forget soon.
"But it's doubtful the Askews will use theirs. "This is it," Nic Askew told his wife at one point during the ordeal. "Never again are we flying Northwest."

That's awesome. $50 travel vouchers for being stuck in Duluth for 10 hours. Glad to know Northwest hasn't changed their policies on compensation much! That's the same amount of compensation I got after being delayed for only half as long on a flight from MSP-SFO. I guess I was lucky!  Smile

You goin'? We fly you dere! You been? We done already flew up in dere!
