What's Up At SLC?

I just went on to FlightAware.com and noticed that every flight inbound to SLC has either done an air return, is circling, or is possibly diverting. The weather looks fine...any ideas?
Cheers,
Markus

Weather looks great. Do you mean those circling over western Colorado?

Every flight inbound to SLC is either circling or diverting right now...I'm just wondering if there's something going on that has closed the runways. Its definitely strange.
Cheers,
Markus

Looks like a couple flights are now landing...every flight has been coming in from the south this afternoon so it doesn't appear to have been a runway switch...

Pres Bush has been in town - could it be the hour that nothing's allowed in/out of the airport that signifies the departure/arrival of AF1?

[edit] It seems like things are landing like normal now, well, not normal but at least landing. Usually the departure rush isn't as crowded at 1610.

I'll bet thats it...interesting how many flights are diverting. You'd think the dispatchers would have taken into consideration extra fuel if AF1 was in town.

Wouldn't they just use flow control for that rather than hold planes in the air?

Well they didn't take it into account on Wednesday when he came in, a Shuttle America Embraer 170 actually diverted to Provo...

There's a fire in the tower. Controllers are now in the backup.

Ah - sorry for double post. Just got on the 5PM news - Electrical fire when a sprinkler pipe leaked on an elevator control panel. The airport was shut down but is now fully back to normal.

FYI, the controllers were shipped to the old tower overlooking the B and C gates.

Phewww!!  Smile

Strange. It's not on any of the Salt Lake City TV station websites. No "Breaking News" banners or live helicopter video feeds.

Yeah I guess it's not breaking news. It was the leading story on the CBS 5 o'clock though, they had a reporter at the base of the tower.

If that happened here, the firefighters would see it on TV via news helicopter before being officially notified by 9-1-1.

I simply mean the TV helicopters have a knack for getting there fast. Three of my friends are dispatchers. They say that many times a news copter is the first to report an emergency to 9-1-1.

We do, but sometimes the VIP movement runs behind schedule. I can think of one where the guy took extra time for a haircut on the ground at the airport and really screwed things up...  Wink

Besides, as Goldenshield said, it was a fire...
