Why No LX Service Between LHR - GVA Anymore?

What happened to the Swiss International service between London Heathrow and Geneva? There definately used to be one. When did it stop and why? Are they returning with the service?

I think it is a slot problem. Before LH bought Swiss, they wanted to join Oneworld and get closer to BA. In these days they sold some LHR slots to BA to get some money (I think they sold it dirt-cheap) and agreed that BA would operate the flights between GVA and LHR. This slot selling was a huge mistake.

When LX and BA signed an agreement towards LX joining OneWorld (which later brokedown), LX had agreed to sell their GVA and BSL slots to BA (I believe a total of 8 per day). In return LX received 50 Million CHF as a loan and codeshared with BA to LHR from GVA/BSL/ZRH and to LGW from GVA.

Today, LX have built up LCY as their airport serving GVA/BSL/ZRH whilst LHR is used solely for ZRH.

Thats a real shame because I think LX is a great carrier, and I often use Geneva to go skiing in the winter.

I suppose Ill have to stick with BA and easyJet!!

Is there a chance LX will ever return for this route? Perhaps once all the airlines are relocated into their correct alliance terminals?

I can imagine that LX/LH is interested to resume GVA-LHR. BTW a question does LH fly from any airport to LGW? If yes, it could probably also be interesting for LX to fly GVA-LGW (when the LH facilities are already there).

LH do not fly from LGW. They only fly from LCY and LHR airports in London. LX had applied for slots in LGW a year ago or so but I doubt we will see them in LGW. There is really nothing to gain in flying to LGW over LCY, other than going head to head with easyjet and BA.

The new terminals won't change the situation. There is still the same capacity for landing on both runways and no new slots being issued. The only way LX could come back on that route is either transfer some ZRH slots over to accomodate GVA (unlikely) or get a partner to operate for them. In that sense, LX had sollicited BD to operate a 4x daily service (quite recently) but visibly this hasn't come past the planning stage.

Technically however, LX still fly LHR-GVA as a seasonal service. The flight is operated (like last season), 2 times each saturday during the winter period using Avro 100s.
