I'm curious. It seems that airlines are retiring the A310 left and right these days. Its not a terrifically ancient ship, so whats the reason for this?
Also, since the 310 is beijng pulled from service, where are so many of them going and can they be picked up cheaply, refurhished, and perhaps be put back into service with a new startup somehwere?

No, i dont think the A300/310's are going out so soon. My national carrier, which already opeartes a sizable fleet of 310s is scouting for more of them. And even if they are retired from pax service, they shall continue to be around in the form of freighters.

Trust me amigo, I'm not worried. I think the plane is pretty ugly anyway. You do know however that AI is quite in the unique in that they're looking for the three one o. They should have no trouble. Most airlines are shopping theirs pretty agressively. In fact the new 767-400 programme could benefit well from the airlines retirement.

Charter carriers are picking up the 310 quite often. First of all, its cheap, a widebody and great for trancontinental flights from thin markets. A perfect mix for both charter passengers and companies. The 310 isn't going anywhere, its just going into a different market.

AI has no plans to retire their A310-300s (8 of them at last count). They are an excellent aircraft for the markets that AI deploys them on (Middle East and Far East) and the fact that they are now becoming cheaply available is prompting AI to look to expand the fleet to 16 by taking more of them on dry lease.
The A310-200s on the other hand are best suited to cargo. What absolute clunkers!

the A310 is my favourite airliner of all time i dont think anything as beautiful will come out ever again, i love its stocky appearence and its in a league of its own unlike the not so appealing Boeings its really sad airlines a replacing them seems like its still with the times to me
