Nowhere near as serious as this appears to be, but a number of years ago, while we were extending our primary runway 10-28, a construction crew dug into a phone line pit, and cut upwards of 10,000 pair. Needless to say, it was a headache to repair.
These accidents just go to show, it pays to know what is under the area where you are digging. In Louisiana, contractors can face severe penalties if they don't call what's known around here as "Louisiana One-Call" before they start digging. There they find out what utilities are underground in the area they want to dig. I would assume most other states have similar laws.
