What's the spotting like at DAY? Are there any good places to park/sit?

I checked out the spotter's area at CVG a couple weeks ago, and was disappointed...it was at least a mile from any touchdown zone. Does DAY offer anything better?

I've only been to DAY during the air show, but I've found that the parking lot in front of a motel along Rt. 40 across from the airline terminal and runway 6R-24L is a good place for spotting. Most of the airline traffic uses runway 6L-24R but those airliners using gates on the south concourse (AA, DL, NW and UA) may prefer 6R-24L. During the air show, 6L-24R is the sole runway used for airline operations.

At least CVG sees almost constant arrivals and departures. DAY can be quiet at times and most jet ops are with RJ's.

If you're from CVG, and into cycling, as your profile indicates, you're probably better off going to LUK and riding the bike path looking out for the Citations and Gulfstreams going in and out of there, especially if you're sick of CRJs. DAY will probably increase your CRJ hell and make you sick of ERJs as well.

At least LUK will give you some weird stuff like the "Outback Steakhouse" blimp doing touch and go's every now and again (I wish I had my camera with me that day... it was rather gusty and pretty freakin' hilarious... I never thought to think that blimps practiced stiff wind stuff like that).

Yeah, it's small non-comm stuff, but it's good for a nice day out "just to be out".

I can vouch for what Wukka & FlyPeoria said, as I fly out of DAY with Delta Connection Academy. If you go to DAY, you're going to see about 5 mainline flights a day tops. An MD-80 or two from AA, about 3 from DL & a UA A319 in the afternoon. There may still be an A-318 flight from Frontier, I'm not sure. Other than that, it's RJ city. You'll occasionally see freighters come in, although they typically use 24R-6L (although I have seen A-300s use 18-36 before).

As for spotting, I can't really think of any areas that would be too good.

Edit- AirTran also brings 717s in, adding to the mainline count.

If you are from Southwestern Ohio and want to go spotting for the big stuff these days, you will need to go to ILN late in the evening and catch all the B762s, DC8s, DC9s, B72Qs, A30Bs, and even an MD11 and 742. The rush starts around 10PM. Even though it is mostly night movements, it beats the plethora of barbie jets and jungle jets that have ruined CVG and DAY.

DAY has been pretty much an RJ city since the late 1990's and mainline flying was cut drastically after 9-11 when TW merged with AA (and later, when the STL hub was downsized), UA reduced mainline service to ORD and US dropped mainline flying altogether (hard to believe they once had a hub there!).

Dayton has an official MSA of about 850,000 (used to be 950,000 before Clark County was made its own MSA), which is relatively small and Dayton itself has only about 160,000 residents. Yet, DAY can draw pax from Clark County (Springfield) and also from metro Cincinnati because of LCC's.

Too bad DAY will probably never be a hub again. FL may build up more flights but I doubt it'll ever be more than 15 dep. a day. I remember Piedmont Airlines' hub when at the Dayton Int'l Air Show & Trade Exposition in 1984, 1985 and 1987 and it was a blast! PI had only 46 weekday dep's in July 1984, but its still seemed busy!

The PI DAY hub benefitted from being in an era with cheap fuel (oil was selling for $12 a barrel in 1985). Another reason the PI hub worked at the time was because post-deregulation cutbacks by TWA (which had 28 daily dep from DAY in 1978 but only about 10 after the PATCO strike in 1981), the introduction of EWR-CMH by PeoplExpress in 1981 (after which TW slashed DAY-LGA from 4 to 1 flight, IIRC) and the withdrawal of AA in January 1982, meant that the former local service airline had little or no competition on its DAY routes.

When DL began building up CVG into a major hub in late 1986, PI began feeling the pressure. After merging PI into its system in August 1989, fares rose and pax traffic dropped about 10% in 1990. The economic recession and higher fuel prices caused US to close DAY as a hub in January 1992.

I remember about 1993 there was a proposed new airline called "Appalachian Airlines" that wanted to use DHC-8's on flights to Chicago, Lynchburg, South Bend and Washington starting in 1994. Never got off the ground. Heartland Airlines, which proposed a DAY hub using 717's, even brought in Piedmont's William Howard as CEO but gave up in early 2001 after failing to obtain enough financing.

Would love to see DAY busy again. Perhaps in five years most 50-seat RJ's will have been replaced by 70-seat aircraft and there will still be 15-20 mainline jet departures. With DL cutting back at CVG, FL seems to have an opportunity to build DAY as a low-fare alternative. I guess we'll see.

And you think you will do better at DAY? At least you will see 763s and a 772 at CVG. I think the biggest plane that comes into DAY now that Emery is gone is a United A319. During the airshow last July I saw maybe six non RJs, and two of them were props, otherwise it was a Delta MD-80, UA A319 and a couple Air Tran 717s.

At that rate drive 3 hours north up I-75 to DTW to see some 747s and A330s... or drive 5 hours north northwest to see ORD.

I just had a look at the path on Google Earth. It looks like fun. Any idea how long it is (one trip around)?

The sad thing is there aren't any cargo ops at DAY anymore, or very few at least. In the 1990s Emery had that nice big hub at DAY with daily flights from 727s, DC-8s and DC-10s, as well as an MD-11, A300 and 742 by contracted carriers for Emery. After Emery itself went down, contracted cargo carriers took over the route like Custom Air Transport and I believe Express.net using 727s and A300s, along with World Airways with DC-10s or MD-11s. I believe the cargo center at DAY closed this past July.
