Qantas 747 Aborted Landing, LHR 09R 06.45 Today

Just wondering if anybody knows anymore about this ? I work in T5 and when I came out of the changing room block (which is about 150m from the end of 09R) people were talking about a Qantas 747 which was over the runway threshold before piling on the power and pulling the gear up. A friend that also saw this said it was only about 10m above the runway!
Now allowing for exaggeration this still seems very late to abort a landing for whatever reason, I know most go-rounds are just due to the aircraft in front being a bit slow to clear the runway but I thought the cut-off point was much further out, so was there anymore to this or as it's mixed-mode that time of the morning was it due to a departing aircraft ?

Wish I had come out a minute earlier and seen it myself  Smile

'Go arounds' and 'aborted' landings happen all the time. I've seen dozens in my time working at airports....even been on a few.

I was on a TWA L-1011 coming into St. Louis back in 1997 when at 50-100ft the aircraft suddenly roared to life, retracted gear, and banked sharply to the left to avoid traffic on the runway which had not yet cleared.


It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.

You can add the power any time you like. Perhaps the pilot was hoping given a few extra seconds whatever it was which made him do a go-around would not be a factor anymore.
A few seconds later, at 10m, he decides there is still a danger then goes around. Not uncommon as far as I know.

At LHR especially, a lot of birds and even fox's occurs from time to time. I have seen them myself. This is not unusual.

Just a note that it takes several seconds for the engines to spool up, and at that speed it would cover the distance very quickly. Power may have been applied earlier and by the time the engines were cranking out all that lovely hot air the aircraft was down to 10m and over the threshold.  Wink

I was on an AA MD-80 flying from ORD-PHL for a "go around"........it was quite cool.....and given the power of the Mad-Dogs with less fuel....whooo...it was a rocket ship... spin 

Last year, I was spotting at LHR and I saw an LH abort a landing (27-R)..thank goodness because a UA 777 was rolling down the runway at the same time.. Wow!

I was on an A343 that aborted landing due to traffic on the drag strip...we came within an inch and three quarters of touching down...the pilot later told me that full power was applied at 230ft AGL. ...those hairdryers can really crank it out.

Wow..must've been cool to see/be in a 747 going around. Last year I was on an ERJ-145 from CLE-LGA when we had to cut-short our final approach and go around since our allocated runway (31) was deemed to wet to land. (Donno why they changed it so late!). It was pretty exciting..we then circled and landed on 4/22 uneventfully.

I love the way you've just described it! There's nothing more amazing for a pilot that a go-around with an overpowered / light aircraft when your safety is not a problem and you don't have to look after your fuel... (i.e. traffic in the rwy)

I've been through numerous go-arounds as pax in an airliner (and a handful as pilot in my own plane). The last one was in a 767 coming into YUL after a long gruelling trip back from Korea. It just p...ed me off because I was fed up, it was 10 pm, and I wanted to get home after two weeks in Korea. Reason was the usual "traffic ahead didn't clear". I've been in a couple though (three to be exact) due to bad weather and not having a stabilized approach at minimums. Two were in a DC-9, one after the other (two attempts to land), on an NDB approach to Rouyn-Noranda back when AC still flew full-sized jets up there. We broke out but too late to stabilize, so we went on to Val d'Or, our alternate and also the final destination of the trip. Since it was my destination too, I appreciated getting in 20 minutes ahead of schedule! Most exciting was in a blizzard landing at Stephenville, NFLD, in an EPA 737. We made it...just, on the second attempt.

Speaking of Korea I was in a go-around there too, in an Asiana 737 on short final, at Kunsan which is a military base with a civilian terminal. An F16 declared an emergency (probably bingo on fuel) and we had to scoot out of the way.

Go-arounds happen at DCA all the time, especially when landing from the north.

Saw a Monarch B757 at Luton the other day, came in for a pretty normal landing, then as it was about to touch down, the left wing swung to a point where it almost clipped the runway. It was being kept up to allow it to line up correctly, but then obviously decided to just push on the throttle and perform a go-around. The guys up front then came around and made the smoothest landing of the day,

Funnily enough, that same aircraft (G-DAJB) was involved in a strange incident about an hour later, while taxiing out for departure.

I actually was on a NW 727-200 coming into EWR landing on RWY 29 were we landed with the mains with the nose raised and did a go around. The crew never did say why they went around but I know that airport pretty well and it seemed like they landed long but who knows.

I know they are, have seen many myself. Strangely, in 35 years of flying into DCA, I have only been on flight once where that has happened.

A couple of years ago I was picking up some friends at IAD coming in on LH FRA-IAD and the 747 had 3 aborted landings. Never did find out what casued that. My friends told me that even the FAs were curious what was going on. On each approach they got down quite low before it lifted up again.
